CBSE: the 9.5 factor is from CBSE’s FAQs on Examinations and CCE 2013-14 (overall indicative percentage = 9.5 × CGPA). Circular Acad-05/2017 ended that scheme from 2017-18: Class 10 now gets marks and grades per subject. CBSE’s notice of 30 November 2023 says the Board does not calculate an overall percentage; the admitting institution or employer may.

How does CBSE convert CGPA to percentage?
CBSE’s FAQ on Examinations and CCE (2013-14) says the overall indicative percentage of marks is 9.5 × CGPA, and a subject’s indicative percentage is 9.5 × its grade point. A CGPA of 8.6 therefore corresponds to about 81.7%. CBSE calls this figure indicative, not an exact mark.
Does CBSE still award CGPA in Class 10?
No. CBSE circular Acad-05/2017 of 31 January 2017 restored the Class 10 board exam from the 2017-18 academic year, with marks and grades awarded per subject. The 9.5 rule applies to grade sheets issued under the older CCE scheme, the last of which was the 2016-17 exam. CBSE’s notice of 30 November 2023 adds that the Board does not award an aggregate or calculate a percentage; an admitting institution or employer may.
Why do universities use different formulas?
Each university sets its own rule, and some have changed it between schemes. VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for its 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes, but CGPA × 10 in its 2022 and 2025 regulations. The University of Mumbai’s 2017 circular gives 7.1 × CGPA + 11, rounded up, for its 10-point CBCS, and GTU’s Notification 1/2012 gives (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. The same CGPA can convert to quite different percentages.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s credits, add the products and divide by the total credits: CGPA = Σ(credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ credits. This is the method in VTU’s 2022 regulations and AKTU’s ordinance, both of which round the result to two decimals. AKTU’s own worked example of eight semesters and 200 credits comes out at 8.2, and this calculator reproduces it.
How do I convert a percentage back to CGPA?
Reverse the same formula: subtract the constant and divide by the multiplier. Under VTU’s 2022 rule, 75% is a CGPA of 7.5; under its 2018-scheme rule, 75% needs 8.25. This tells you what CGPA a target percentage implies. It is not an official grade conversion, so do not use it to state a CGPA you were not awarded.
My university is not in the list. What should I use?
Choose Custom and enter the multiplier and constant printed on your marksheet, grade card or transcript. We only list a formula when we could read it in the institution’s own notice or regulation. The Anna University preset covers the University Departments, which is what that letter applies to, not every affiliated college.

Each preset comes from an official document. CBSE’s 9.5 multiplier is from its CCE FAQ (2013-14) and applies to Class 10 grade sheets from the CCE years; circular Acad-05/2017 ended that scheme from 2017-18. VTU’s formulas are from its CGPA Standard Formula page and its 2022 and 2025 B.E./B.Tech regulations. The University of Mumbai formula is from its circular of 19 June 2017. The formulas really are different. A CGPA of 8.2 converts to 82% under VTU’s 2022 rule and AKTU’s ordinance, 74.5% under VTU’s 2018-scheme rule, 77% under GTU’s notice and 70% under the University of Mumbai’s circular, which rounds 69.22 up. This is why a generic multiply-by-ten answer can be wrong for your degree. It is also why the formula printed on your own marksheet or transcript always takes precedence over this page.
