How is the life path number calculated?
This page follows the most widely taught method: reduce the month, the day and the year separately by adding their digits until you reach a single digit, then add the three results and reduce again. For December 25, 1990 that is 12 → 3, 25 → 7 and 1990 → 19 → 10 → 1, then 3 + 7 + 1 = 11. At each step 11, 22 and 33 are kept as master numbers instead of being reduced. Some numerologists add all the digits of the date at once instead, and the page tells you when that gives a different number.
What are master numbers?
In the usual convention 11, 22 and 33 are not reduced to 2, 4 and 6, because numerologists treat them as intensified versions of those numbers. This calculator keeps them whenever they appear in a reduction, both for the separate month, day and year and for the final total. Not every school recognises 33, and some only keep master numbers in the final total, so other calculators can give different results.
What is the difference between expression, soul urge and personality?
All three come from your full birth name. The expression number, also called the destiny number, uses every letter. The soul urge, or heart’s desire, uses only the vowels, and the personality number uses only the consonants. In each case the values of each part of the name are added and reduced, and then the reduced parts are added and reduced again.
How does the Pythagorean chart work?
The alphabet is written out in rows of nine, so A, J and S are 1, B, K and T are 2, and so on up to I and R, which are 9. It is named after Pythagoras, though the modern system mostly comes from 20th-century numerology writers. Another system, Chaldean numerology, uses a different chart based on letter sounds and gives different results.
Which name should I use?
Traditional numerology uses your full name as it was recorded at birth, including middle names, because it is meant to describe what you were born with. Many people also calculate the name they use now to compare the two. Accents are removed before calculating, and letters outside the Latin alphabet are ignored, because the Pythagorean chart only covers A to Z.
Is numerology scientific?
No. There is no evidence that numbers derived from a name or birth date say anything about personality or the future, and the meanings on this page are traditional associations, not findings. The calculator is meant for entertainment and curiosity, and the arithmetic is shown in full so you can see exactly what it does.
About this tool
This numerology calculator works out the four numbers most often used in Western (Pythagorean) numerology: the life path number from your date of birth, and the expression, soul urge and personality numbers from your full name. Each result comes with the short traditional meaning numerologists give it, from 1, the leader, to the master numbers 11, 22 and 33.
Different books and websites use slightly different rules, so the page states each rule it uses and shows its working. The life path reduces month, day and year separately before adding them, the method usually taught because it keeps master numbers that appear along the way. Name numbers are calculated one name at a time, reduced, and then combined. When the single-sum method would give a different life path, the page says so.
The letter Y is the classic problem in name numerology, because it can be a vowel (as in Lynn or Mary) or a consonant (as in Yolanda). By default the calculator treats Y as a vowel unless the letter after it is a vowel, a simple version of the usual rule, and you can switch to always-vowel or always-consonant to match another source. Accented letters are converted to their plain forms first, so José is calculated as JOSE.
