How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply length by width in feet. A 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. With inches, convert them to a fraction of a foot first: 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, so 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft is 125 sq ft. The calculator takes feet and inches separately and does the conversion for you.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles that don’t overlap — for example the main room and the alcove — measure each, and add the areas. Choose “L-shape” and enter both rectangles; the room total appears under the inputs. For other odd shapes, add each piece as its own room.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
A common rule of thumb is about 10% for a straight layout, and more for diagonal or herringbone patterns, rooms with many corners, or tile that breaks easily. The flooring maker’s installation guide may give its own figure — enter whatever it recommends as the waste allowance.
How many square feet are in a square meter?
One square meter is about 10.764 square feet, because a foot is exactly 0.3048 m and 1 ÷ 0.3048² ≈ 10.7639. One square yard is exactly 9 square feet (0.83612736 m²). The calculator shows all three so you can compare quotes in any unit.
Which countries does the calculator support?

About this tool
This square footage calculator is built for the flooring, tile, carpet and real-estate questions that start with “how big is it?”. Add each room as a rectangle, an L-shape made of two rectangles, a circle (by diameter) or a triangle, and enter the measurements in feet and inches or in meters. Each room shows its own area, and the total is given in square feet, square meters and square yards at once.
Mixed feet-and-inches measurements are an easy place for hand calculations to go wrong: 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft, not 10.6 ft. The calculator keeps feet and inches in separate boxes and converts exactly (1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 in = 2.54 cm), and switching between feet and meters converts the numbers already typed. Fractions such as 3 1/2 are accepted in any box.
For ordering, add a waste allowance for cuts, pattern matching and breakage; the area to buy is shown with it included. Enter a price per square foot or square meter to see the material cost, and the coverage printed on a box of flooring to see how many boxes to order — always rounded up, since stores do not sell part boxes.
