- How is the tip amount calculated?
- The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 15% tip on a $40 bill is 40 × 0.15 = $6, making the total $46. The calculator does this automatically as you type.
- How much should I tip?
- In the United States, 15–20% is the common range for table service, with 18–20% typical for good service. For counter service or takeout, 10% or a small fixed amount is common. Customs vary by country, so the quick buttons cover the usual range and you can enter any custom percentage.
- Does the calculator handle splitting the bill?
- Yes. Set the number of people and the calculator divides the total, including the tip, evenly among them. Each person’s share is shown alongside the tip amount and grand total.
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- Etiquette guides generally say the pre-tax subtotal is sufficient, since tax is not part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total for simplicity — on a typical bill the difference is small. Enter whichever amount you prefer; the calculator applies your chosen percentage to exactly what you type.
- Is my bill information stored or sent anywhere?

A few practical notes. If the menu price already includes a service charge — common in much of Europe and on large-party bills in the US — an additional tip is optional, so check the receipt before adding one.
