What number format does a WhatsApp link need?
WhatsApp’s click-to-chat format is https://wa.me/ followed by the full number in international format: the country code and the number, digits only, with no +, no leading zeros, no spaces, brackets or dashes. A UK mobile dialled as 07911 123456 becomes wa.me/447911123456, and a Turkish mobile dialled as 0532 123 45 67 becomes wa.me/905321234567. This tool does that conversion for you, and keeps the 0 in the few countries, such as Italy, where it is part of the number.
How is the pre-filled message encoded?
The message goes after ?text= and must be URL-encoded. Spaces become %20, line breaks %0A, & becomes %26, # becomes %23 and ? becomes %3F, and emoji and accented letters are written as their UTF-8 bytes, so 👋 becomes %F0%9F%91%8B. Without encoding, an & or # would cut your message short. The person who opens the link still sees the text in the box and can edit it before sending.
Can I make a link without a phone number?
Yes. Leave the number empty and the tool builds wa.me/?text= with your message. When someone opens it, WhatsApp asks them to pick a contact or group to send the message to. It is useful for “share this with a friend” buttons, invitations and referral messages.
Does it work with WhatsApp Business and personal accounts?
Yes. Click-to-chat links work the same way for a personal WhatsApp account and a WhatsApp Business app account: the link just opens a chat with the number. The number must be registered on WhatsApp for the chat to open. The tool only checks that the format and length are plausible; it cannot tell whether a number exists or uses WhatsApp, so test the link before you publish it.
How should I use the WhatsApp QR code?
The QR code contains the same wa.me link, so scanning it with a phone camera opens the chat with your message ready. Print it on shop counters, business cards, menus, packaging or flyers. Download the PNG at 1024 px or more (or the SVG) for print, keep dark modules on a light background with a clear white border, and test-scan a printed copy. The tool blocks colour combinations with too little contrast to scan reliably.
Is my phone number sent anywhere?
No. The link, QR code and HTML are built in your browser, and the number and message are never sent to our server. We don’t shorten or redirect the link, so there is no tracking and nothing that can expire. The optional generator link keeps your details after the # in the address; browsers never send that part to a web server, so it stays out of our logs and analytics, but anyone you share it with can read it.
About this tool
This WhatsApp link generator builds click-to-chat links in the format WhatsApp documents in its Help Center: https://wa.me/ followed by the full phone number in international format, with ?text= and a URL-encoded message when you want one pre-filled. Opening the link starts a chat with that number without saving it as a contact first, in the WhatsApp app on a phone or in WhatsApp Web on a computer. Leave the number out and you get wa.me/?text=…, which lets the sender choose who receives the message.
Most broken WhatsApp links come from the number. People paste it the way they dial it at home, with a leading 0, a + sign, brackets or spaces, and WhatsApp needs digits only, starting with the country code. Pick the country and type the number in whatever form you have: the tool strips the formatting, removes the domestic trunk prefix (the 0 in the UK, Türkiye, Germany or India, the 1 in the US, the 8 in Russia), keeps the 0 where it belongs to the number, and reads numbers that start with + or 00 as already international. It explains every change it makes and warns when a number looks too short or too long, up to the international maximum of 15 digits. It cannot check that a number exists or has WhatsApp.
The message box accepts emoji, accented and non-Latin letters and line breaks, and encodes them with standard URL encoding, so characters like &, # and ? arrive intact. From the finished link you can open a test chat, download a QR code as PNG or SVG in sizes up to 2048 px with your own colours (as long as they keep enough contrast to scan), and copy HTML for a website: a plain link button or a floating chat button for the corner of the page, both with inline CSS and no script.
Everything runs in your browser. We don’t shorten links or send them through our site, so the link is exactly what WhatsApp documents, has no click tracking and never expires. Group invite links (chat.whatsapp.com/…) are a different thing: WhatsApp creates them for each group, and an admin copies them from the group’s info screen, so they can’t be generated here.
