Frequently asked questions

How many charades words are there?

There are about 500 prompts: seven categories (animals, actions, jobs, movie scenes, sports and hobbies, holidays, and kids) at three difficulty levels, with around 24 cards in each deck. Mixed combines all seven categories at the chosen difficulty. Every prompt was written for this tool and chosen to be actable without words.

Why are there no real movie titles?

The Movie scenes category uses generic genres and moments that anyone can act, such as a heist movie, a courtroom drama or walking away from an explosion. These work across ages and countries, don’t depend on who has seen which films, and are easy to mime. If your group loves film titles, one player can whisper a title to the actor instead.

Will the same card come up twice?

Not until the deck runs out. Each difficulty and category keeps its own shuffled deck, and a dealt card is removed from it. When a deck is empty it is reshuffled, and the tool shows a notice. The card you just saw is never dealt first after a reshuffle.

How do the timer and scores work?

Press Start and the chosen team’s turn begins with a countdown. Each Got it adds a point to the acting team and deals the next card. Skip deals a new card without a point. When time is up, three beeps play and the button changes to start the next team’s turn. You can also correct any score with the +1 and −1 buttons or end a turn early.

Which difficulty should I choose?

Easy has single animals, simple actions and familiar jobs that suit children from about five and quick warm-up rounds. Medium adds two-part actions and scenes for mixed family groups. Hard has tricky situations, less common jobs and sports, and film genres that take more creative acting, which works best for teenagers and adults.

Is anything uploaded or saved?

No. All the prompts are built into the page and every card is dealt in your browser using crypto.getRandomValues. Team names and scores stay on your device and are cleared when you close the tab. Once loaded, the game works without an internet connection.

About this tool

This charades generator replaces the hat full of paper slips. Choose a difficulty and a category (animals, actions, jobs, movie scenes, sports and hobbies, holidays, kids, or all of them mixed) and it deals one card at a time. The actor reads the prompt and acts it out without speaking while their team guesses. A turn timer, scores for two to four named teams, and Got it and Skip buttons turn a phone or laptop into a complete game kit.

All of the roughly 500 prompts were written for this tool. The movie category deliberately avoids real titles and uses scenes and genres anyone can act, such as a submarine movie, a dance battle or a villain’s evil laugh, so the game doesn’t depend on who has seen what. Each deck is shuffled with cryptographic randomness in your browser, and no card repeats until the deck is used up.

There are two ways to show the card. For a small group, pass one phone around and turn on Hide each word, so the actor taps to reveal it and nobody else sees it by accident. For a classroom or party, open the big screen on a TV or projector. With the word hidden there, the room sees only the acting team, a large countdown and the scores, while the actor draws cards from this page on a phone.

A few house rules keep charades fun: agree on common signs before you start (fingers for the number of words, tugging an ear for “sounds like”), allow one or two skips per turn, and give younger players the easy deck and a longer timer. For mixed-age games, let each team choose its own difficulty for its turn. The tool keeps a separate deck for each level, so nothing repeats.
