- Square or circle — which should I frame for?
- Frame for the circle. Facebook stores the square you upload and masks it to a circle almost everywhere it appears, so about a fifth of the image sits in corners nobody sees in normal use. The exception is when someone opens the photo itself, where the full square is shown.
- Why does my profile picture look soft?
- Because it is displayed at well under 200 pixels in most places, generated from your upload by Facebook's own resizing. A close-cropped face at 720 pixels gives that process a clean source. A photo where your face occupies a small part of the frame will look soft no matter how large the file is.
- Can I upload a rectangular photo and let Facebook crop it?
- You can, and Facebook will offer you a crop tool — but the crop happens after upload and after re-compression, and the preview is small. Cropping to a square first means you decide the framing at full size, on your own screen, before anything is compressed.
- Does the photo stay on this site?
- There is nothing for it to stay on. The image is read into your browser tab, resized and compressed there, and written straight back out as a download. No copy is transmitted, which is the reason to prefer a local tool for photographs of yourself.
