- Does an animated GIF work as a profile picture?
- Not for a standard account — X takes a still frame from it. If you upload an animated file, choose one whose first frame stands on its own, or convert it to a still image yourself so the frame is your decision rather than the platform's.
- My avatar looks fine on my profile but muddy in the timeline.
- That is the small-size test failing. Profile pages show the picture reasonably large; timelines show it at a fraction of that. Detailed illustrations and full scenes turn to mush at that scale, while a face, a bold letter or a single strong shape survives.
- Should the image be square or circular with transparency?
- Square. X masks it to a circle at display time, so a transparent circular PNG gains nothing and risks a visible edge if the mask and your circle do not align exactly. Upload a full square and let the platform do the masking.
