- Why 512 when Discord shows avatars so small?
- Because the sizes vary widely. The same file appears tiny in a member list, small beside each message, and considerably larger on your profile card. Discord generates those from your upload, so 512 gives it a source that downscales cleanly to all of them.
- Does a transparent PNG work as an avatar?
- Transparency is preserved, but the circular mask means only the middle of the image is ever shown — a transparent background mostly affects the corners, which are hidden anyway. A solid or simple background usually reads better against Discord's dark and light themes than a transparent one.
- What about animated avatars?
- Animated GIF avatars are a paid Nitro feature; standard accounts get a still image. If you are on a free account, converting your GIF to a still frame here lets you pick which frame represents you instead of leaving it to the platform.
- Why does my detailed artwork look bad in chat?
- Because message avatars are rendered very small, and fine linework disappears at that size. Crop closer — to a face or a single element of the artwork — rather than fitting the whole piece into the square. The full image can live on your profile banner instead.
About this tool
Discord displays the same avatar at a wide range of sizes: barely larger than a line of text in a member list, small beside every message, and noticeably bigger on a profile card. All of those are generated from the single square you upload, which is why 512 × 512 is a sensible source — large enough to downscale cleanly, small enough to stay a modest file.
The circular mask and the small display sizes push in the same direction: crop closer than feels natural. Detailed artwork that looks striking at full size loses its linework entirely beside a message, so a tight crop on a face or a single element of the piece works far better than fitting the whole composition into the square. The corners are masked away in any case.
Two Discord-specific notes. Animated avatars are a Nitro feature, so on a free account a GIF is reduced to a still frame — converting it yourself means you choose which frame that is. And because Discord ships both dark and light themes, an avatar with a solid or simple background is more predictable than a transparent one.
