How do I type Hindi with an English keyboard?
Use Phonetic mode and spell the word as it sounds: vowels are a, aa, i, ii (or ee), u, uu (or oo), e, ai, o, au; consonants are k, kh, g, gh, ch, chh, j, jh, t, th, d, dh, n, p, ph, b, bh, m, y, r, l, v, sh and s. Capitals mark the retroflex letters — T ट, Th ठ, D ड, Dh ढ, N ण, Sh ष — and R gives ड़. Consonants typed without a vowel between them join into a conjunct, so namaste becomes नमस्ते and prem becomes प्रेम. Because of that, type the a that the spelling keeps even when you do not pronounce it: sarakaar gives सरकार, while sarkaar gives सर्कार. M adds the anusvara (hiMdii → हिंदी) and ~ the chandrabindu (maa~ → माँ). The full chart is under the keyboard.
What is the InScript keyboard?
InScript is the Government of India’s standard keyboard for Indian scripts, published by the Department of Electronics in 1986 and included in the Bureau of Indian Standards’ IS 13194:1991. It puts the vowels and matras on the left half of the keyboard and the consonants on the right, and uses the same key positions for Devanagari, Bengali, Tamil and the other Indian scripts. This page uses Microsoft’s “Devanagari - INSCRIPT” layout; the “Hindi Traditional” keyboard that Windows adds for Hindi is the same on every letter key, leaving out only a few rarely used characters. It is also one of the layouts accepted in Indian government Hindi typing tests, alongside Remington.
How do I install a Hindi keyboard on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone?
Windows 11: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Hindi. Then open ⋯ next to Hindi → Language options → Add a keyboard: Hindi Traditional is InScript, and recent versions also list Hindi Phonetic. Switch with Windows key + Space. Windows 10 has the same steps under Settings → Time & Language → Language. Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit → + → Hindi, then choose Hindi – Transliteration (type in English letters) or Devanagari; switch with Control + Space or the Globe key. Android: in Gboard open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard → Hindi and choose the Devanagari layout or the one that transliterates English letters. iPhone and iPad: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Hindi, choose Devanagari or Transliteration, and switch with the globe key.
How do I type conjuncts like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र?
A conjunct is two consonants with a halant between them, and the font joins them into one shape. In InScript, type the first consonant, the halant key ( ् on d) and the second consonant: क + ् + ष gives क्ष. The four most common ones also have their own keys — Shift+5 ज्ञ, Shift+6 त्र, Shift+7 क्ष, Shift+8 श्र — and Shift+3 adds the ्र of प्र, Shift+4 the र् of र्म. In Phonetic mode just type the letters together: kSh or x → क्ष, tr → त्र, shr → श्र, GY → ज्ञ. To show a visible halant instead of a joined form, insert the ZWNJ key after the halant.
Why does my Hindi text show boxes or letters in the wrong order?
Boxes mean the app showing the text has no Devanagari font, and a matra such as ि drawn on the wrong side or a dotted circle ◌ means the app does not shape Devanagari correctly. The text itself is standard Unicode and stays correct when copied — Windows, macOS, Android and iOS all include Devanagari fonts and shape it properly. This page loads Noto Sans Devanagari so it looks right even where no Hindi font is installed. If a character looks wrong in another app, paste the text into a word processor or browser to check it.
Is what I type saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded — the keyboard and the transliteration run entirely in your browser. The text is also not stored, so it disappears when you close or reload the page: copy it or download the .txt file before you leave. The downloaded file is UTF-8 with Windows line endings, so it opens correctly in Notepad, Word and any other editor.
About this tool
This Hindi typing tool gives you three ways to write Devanagari in one text box. Phonetic mode lets you type Hindi in English letters — namaste duniyaa becomes नमस्ते दुनिया as you press space. The InScript layout turns your own keyboard into the standard Indian keyboard, and the on-screen keys, with their Shift and AltGr layers, work with a mouse or a touch screen. You can mix all three: while you type phonetically, a click on ऋ or ॐ inserts it directly.
The phonetic scheme is based on ITRANS, the long-established convention for writing Indian scripts in Latin letters. It keeps a single rule for conjuncts — consonants written together join — so the result is predictable: kRRiShNa → कृष्ण, vidyaalay → विद्यालय, GYaan → ज्ञान, achchhaa → अच्छा. Nukta letters are q, K, G, z, f and R (क़ ख़ ग़ ज़ फ़ ड़), and O gives the ऑ of words like डॉक्टर (DOkTar). The output is standard Unicode in normal form C, so it can be searched, sorted and pasted anywhere.
The InScript layout here follows Microsoft’s Devanagari - INSCRIPT keyboard key for key, including the AltGr layer with Devanagari digits (१२३), the nukta letters and the double danda (॥). That makes the page useful for practising InScript for Hindi typing tests, and for typing Hindi on a computer where you cannot install a keyboard.
