Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo is read, scaled and cut into pieces by your browser on your device. To let you continue later, a copy of the scaled picture is kept in this browser’s own storage, IndexedDB, with the puzzle’s progress. Discard, finishing the puzzle or starting one with a built-in picture removes it.
How is my progress saved?
Piece positions, joins and time are saved in this browser after each move, every 15 seconds and when you leave the page. Come back to the page and press Continue. One puzzle is kept at a time, so starting a new one replaces it. Saves stay on this device and don’t move to another browser; clearing site data deletes them.
How do rotated pieces work?
With Rotated pieces ticked, every piece starts turned by a random quarter turn. Tap a piece to turn it 90 degrees clockwise; a group of joined pieces turns as one. Pieces only join when they face the same way, and they lock onto the board only when upright.
Why does 500 pieces sometimes give 494 or 504?
Pieces are laid out in a grid of rows and columns that matches the shape of the picture, so each piece stays close to square. The nearest grid to the count you pick is used, and the menu shows the exact number and layout, such as 494 pieces in 26 columns and 19 rows for a 4:3 picture.
Can I do a jigsaw puzzle on my phone?
Yes. Drag pieces with a finger, drag an empty part of the table to move around, and pinch with two fingers to zoom. Full screen gives the puzzle the whole display. Large puzzles have small pieces on a phone, so zoom in on the area you are working on, or pick 100 to 200 pieces.
Where do the built-in pictures come from?
They are original illustrations drawn by this page’s own code: a mountain lake, hot-air balloons, a flower meadow, a city at night, a patchwork quilt and a stained-glass window. They are not photographs or stock images, and the same picture is drawn every time so a saved puzzle can be restored.
About this tool
This online jigsaw puzzle cuts a picture into pieces with the familiar interlocking tabs and blanks. Every edge between two pieces gets its own curve, varied a little in size and position, so pieces fit only their real neighbours. Straight edges mark the border, and the Edges only button hides the inner pieces while you build the frame.
When you drop a piece close to a matching neighbour, it snaps into position and the two move as one group from then on. Pieces and groups dropped near their place on the dashed board lock there. Ghost image shows the picture faintly on the board, and Preview adds a small copy in the corner. The timer counts active time, pausing when the tab is hidden, and stops when the last piece joins.
Each piece is pre-drawn once when the puzzle starts, so moving pieces redraws quickly even with 500 of them on a phone. The view can be panned and zoomed freely, and Spread out loose pieces lays single pieces out around the board again, keeping their current rotation.
Your own photos stay on your device: they are reduced to at most about 2.4 megapixels, cut in the browser and stored only in this browser’s storage for resuming. JPG, PNG, WebP and other formats your browser can open are supported. No account or download is needed.
