How does the magic eight ball work?
The toy is a black plastic ball filled with dark blue liquid. Inside floats a 20-sided die, an icosahedron, with a short answer printed on each face. When you turn the ball over, one face drifts up against a round window. This online version picks one of the same 20 faces at random and animates it rising into the window.
What are the 20 answers?
There are ten positive answers (It is certain, It is decidedly so, Without a doubt, Yes definitely, You may rely on it, As I see it yes, Most likely, Outlook good, Yes, Signs point to yes), five non-committal ones (Reply hazy try again, Ask again later, Better not tell you now, Cannot predict now, Concentrate and ask again) and five negative ones (Don’t count on it, My reply is no, My sources say no, Outlook not so good, Very doubtful).
Are the answers random and fair?
Yes. Each of the 20 answers has exactly a 1 in 20 chance on every shake, so you get a positive answer half the time, a non-committal one a quarter of the time and a negative one a quarter of the time. The pick uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, and the same answer can come up twice in a row, just as with the real toy.
Why doesn’t shaking my phone work?
Shake detection uses your phone’s motion sensors, which browsers only share after you tap Shake your phone to ask. On iPhone and iPad, Safari then shows a permission prompt, and you must tap Allow. The page also has to be open over a secure connection, which it is. If you said no, reload the page to be asked again, or just tap the ball instead.

About this tool
This online magic eight ball recreates the fortune-telling toy that has been answering questions at sleepovers and office desks since the 1950s. Ask a question that has a yes or no answer, shake the ball and wait a moment while the answer floats up out of the murky blue liquid. The ball is drawn in the browser with layered gradients and highlights, so it looks glossy and round at any screen size.
You can shake it three ways: tap the ball, press the button or press Enter after typing a question. On a phone you can switch on shake-to-ask and give the device a real shake. The page only listens to motion sensors after you turn this on, and on iPhone it asks for your permission first. Several quick jolts in a row count as a shake, so walking around with the phone in your hand won’t set it off.
The answers are the 20 classic replies: ten that lean yes, five that dodge the question and five that lean no. Each shake picks one of them with equal odds, using the browser’s secure random number generator, which means half of all answers are positive over time. Your last 20 questions and answers are kept on the page with a running count, which is handy for a best-of-three.
