A letter after the time names the zone: 1430Z is 14:30 UTC (“Zulu”). A–M run east of Greenwich, N–Y west, and J is not used. Zones with half-hour offsets have no letter.

How do I convert standard time to military time?
For AM times, keep the digits and write them as four figures, except that 12 AM becomes 00: 7:05 AM is 0705 and 12:30 AM is 0030. For PM times, add 12 to the hour, except 12 PM, which stays 12: 3:15 PM is 1515 and 12:45 PM is 1245. Military time drops the colon and the AM or PM.
How do I convert military time back to standard time?
If the first two digits are 13 or more, subtract 12 and add PM: 1900 is 7:00 PM. If they are 12, it is PM without subtracting: 1210 is 12:10 PM. If they are 00, the hour is 12 AM: 0045 is 12:45 AM. Anything from 01 to 11 is AM as written: 0930 is 9:30 AM.
How do you say military time out loud?
On the hour you say the hour and hundred: 1400 is fourteen hundred and 0600 is zero six hundred, often followed by hours. Otherwise say the hour and the minutes as two numbers: 1430 is fourteen thirty and 2115 is twenty-one fifteen. A leading zero is said as zero, or informally oh, so 0905 is zero nine zero five.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used: 0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 its end, so 2400 on Monday is the same instant as 0000 on Tuesday. To avoid confusion, the Allied communications manual ACP 121 advises against writing 2400 or 0000 in messages where practicable, using 2359 or 0001 instead. Noon is always 1200.
What does Zulu time mean?
Zulu is the military name for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), from the zone letter Z, so 1430Z is 14:30 UTC. Under ACP 121, published by the Combined Communications-Electronics Board, A to M (skipping J) are the zones east of Greenwich, UTC+1 to UTC+12, and N to Y are UTC−1 to UTC−12 to the west. Washington, DC is R (UTC−5) on standard time and Q (UTC−4) on daylight time.
Is military time the same as the 24-hour clock?
It is the same clock with a different style. The 24-hour clock used in most of the world usually writes a colon, as 14:30, while military time is written as four digits, 1430, and read as fourteen thirty. Hospitals, aviation and emergency services use it for the same reason the military does: no time can be mistaken for its AM or PM twin.

Military time numbers the hours of the day from 00 to 23, so every time has exactly one name and there is no AM or PM to get wrong. This converter works in both directions at once: type 7:45 PM and see 1945, or type 1945 and see 7:45 PM, along with how the time is said aloud. It accepts the usual ways of writing either format, including 14:30, 1430 hours and a trailing zone letter like 1430Z.
The rule is short. Morning times keep their digits, written as four figures, with 12 AM becoming 00. Afternoon and evening times add 12 to the hour, with 12 PM staying 12. Going the other way, subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or more and add PM. The chart below the converter lists all 24 hours side by side with their spoken form, for quick reference.
Saying it follows a pattern too. Whole hours are hundreds — 0600 is zero six hundred and 1400 is fourteen hundred, often with hours on the end — and other times are read as two numbers, so 1430 is fourteen thirty and 0905 is zero nine zero five. Midnight can be written 0000 at the start of a day or 2400 at its end; the Allied communications manual ACP 121 goes further and advises using 2359 or 0001 in messages to avoid any doubt.
Military messages also name the time zone with a letter. Z, or Zulu, is Coordinated Universal Time; under ACP 121 the letters A to M, skipping J, cover UTC+1 to UTC+12 and N to Y cover UTC−1 to UTC−12, so US Eastern time is R in winter and Q in summer.
