Rain

Weather & nature

Indoors

Starts at −20 dB and fades in over 3 seconds. Set your device volume low first, then raise it slowly.

Sleep timer

No timer — plays until you pause it.

Hearing safety: keep the volume moderate — quieter than normal conversation is plenty for sleep — and avoid long sessions in headphones at high levels.

For babies: keep any sound source well away from the cot, at a low volume, and do not leave it running all night.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real recordings of rain?

No. Every layer is synthesised in your browser with the Web Audio API — no audio files are downloaded. Rain is filtered noise plus thousands of individually shaped drops: bright ringing taps for a window, low pitched thumps for a tent, mid-range drumming and gutter drips for a roof. Thunder is low rumbling noise built from several overlapping swells; birds are whistles, trills and chirps made from sine waves. The café murmur is the roughest approximation: babbling synthetic voices, too indistinct to understand, with cup clinks and a little room echo.

Will it keep playing when my screen is off?

It depends on the browser. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox the sound plays through a media element, so the browser shows play and pause in its media controls and on the lock screen, and on Android it usually keeps playing with the screen off. On iPhone and iPad, Safari may pause web audio when the screen locks or you switch apps; if that happens you will see a note and can press Play again. The reliable option on any device is to tick “Keep the screen awake” and turn the brightness down.

Do rain sounds help you sleep or focus?

Many people find a steady sound like rain masks traffic, neighbours or office chatter, and a change in noise is more likely to wake or distract you than a constant one. The research is thin, though: a 2021 systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews rated the evidence that continuous noise improves sleep as very low quality. Keep it quiet, use the sleep timer rather than playing it all night, and see what works for you.

How often does it thunder?

When the Thunder slider is up, a rumble comes at a random moment every 15 to 50 seconds, with the first one a few seconds after you turn it on. Most are distant rolls; now and then one is a close strike with a sharp crack. The picture above the mixer flashes with lightning 0.3 to 2.5 seconds before each rumble, as a real storm would — unless your device is set to reduce motion, in which case the flash is left out.

Will I notice the sound repeating?

Each continuous layer is a stereo loop between 15 and 43 seconds long, and every layer has a different length, so a mix of several does not repeat as a whole for a long time. Each loop starts from a random point, and its end is crossfaded into its beginning so there is no click or gap. Thunder and birds are not loops at all: they are picked at random, panned to a random place and slightly re-pitched each time.

Does it use mobile data or battery?

Nothing is streamed — the sounds are generated on your device, so after the page has loaded no data is used. Each layer takes a fraction of a second to prepare the first time you use it, and playing it back is light work for the processor. The rain animation stops when you pause, and it is replaced by a still picture if your device asks for reduced motion.

About this tool

This rain sounds mixer has eleven layers in three groups. Rain covers light rain, a heavy downpour, rain tapping on a window, rain drumming on a tent and rain on a roof heard from inside. Weather & nature adds thunder, gusting wind, ocean waves and birdsong, and Indoors has a crackling fire and a café murmur. Each has its own slider, so you can build anything from a soft drizzle to a full storm, or a fire and rain on the roof for a cabin evening.

The presets are starting points. Sleep is rain on a roof with light rain and a little wind; Focus puts rain on a window over a quiet café; Storm is heavy rain with thunder, wind and rain on the glass. Cozy cabin, Camping, Beach and Forest morning cover the other moods. Moving any slider leaves the preset, and the mixer remembers your own mix for next time.

All of it is generated in your browser rather than downloaded. Each rain layer is shaped noise with drops added one at a time at random moments, their pitch, sharpness and loudness chosen to match the surface they land on. The wind's gusts, the fire's flicker and the rise and fall of the waves follow slow curves that repeat exactly once per loop, so the loop joins itself seamlessly. A limiter on the output keeps a full mix with thunder from clipping.

For sleep, keep the volume low — quieter than normal conversation is enough — and use the sleep timer: it is booked on the audio clock, so the one-minute fade-out still happens when the browser slows down timers in a background tab. For babies, keep any sound source well away from the cot and at a low volume, and do not leave it running all night. Nothing you do here is uploaded; your mix, volume and timer are stored only in this browser.
