Do all Instagram images need to be square?
No. This page offers a square preset, not a requirement for every post or profile view. Instagram supports other shapes, and its feed and profile previews can crop the same image differently. Choose the framing you need and inspect the preview in the app.
What happens to a landscape photo?
Cover mode fills the square without stretching. For example, a 1600 × 900 photo is cropped to its central 900 × 900 region, removing 350 source pixels from each side, then scaled to 1080 × 1080. Objects near either side can be lost.
Can I keep the entire picture?
Select Fit in Options. It keeps the whole image inside the chosen dimensions without cropping, so the output may be narrower or shorter than 1080 pixels. For an exact square with borders, place the picture on a square background in an image editor first.
Will this prevent Instagram from compressing my photo?
No. The platform may process your upload again. This tool lets you control your exported crop, format and compression; it cannot control Instagram's processing or guarantee an identical final display.
About this tool
A square preset is useful when you are preparing a square design or want a consistent set of images. It does not imply that a square is the only supported format or that every profile preview will show the entire square. The final in-app preview is the place to check that important details remain visible.
The practical choice is between filling the frame and keeping the whole picture. Cover removes edges to produce the exact square. Fit keeps the source proportions and may produce a rectangle. Neither mode stretches a face or restores detail that was absent from a small original.
Export from your best original, inspect the full-size result for compression artifacts, and keep text away from edges that may be cropped later. Processing is local to this browser. Large images can take time or exceed the memory available on a phone, and the original file is left unchanged.
