Is there one safe area for every story?
No. Controls, captions, stickers, devices and app versions affect what overlaps the image. Leave space around important details and check the destination app's preview. This tool does not overlay a verified safe-area template.
Why does a landscape photo lose so much of its width?
A 9:16 frame is narrow relative to a landscape photo. Cover crops the sides to fill it. For a 1600 × 900 source, the central region is only about 506 × 900 before scaling. Use Fit to retain the whole image, or prepare a vertical background in an editor.
Can I use this export for a Reel cover or another app?
It is a 9:16 image, so it can be a starting point where that shape is useful. It is not a promise that every app, cover preview or upload form uses the same crop, size limit or overlay area. Check each destination before publishing.
Will shrinking the file change the picture?
Reducing dimensions, JPEG quality or a PNG color palette can remove detail. Compare the result with the original, especially around small type, gradients and faces. A smaller download is only useful if the image remains readable.
About this tool
Preparing a story is a framing problem before it is a compression problem. Cover mode preserves proportions but discards the parts that do not fit the tall frame. A subject near the edge of a wide photo can disappear entirely, so inspect the crop before working on captions.
The 1080 × 1920 preset produces an exact vertical frame in Cover mode. Fit mode retains every part of the source but can produce different dimensions. This tool does not add a background, reposition the subject or simulate the destination app's interface.
Keep the original and test the exported picture in the app where you will use it. No fixed fraction of the top or bottom is guaranteed to stay clear across devices and placements. Image processing takes place on your device, and the time needed depends on its memory, processor and the source image.
