Find a size from foot length

Measure both feet in the evening and use the longer one. See the measuring guide below.

Sizes differ between brands and even between models of one brand, often by half a size and sometimes a full size. These conversions are approximate: when a brand publishes its own chart, go by that chart and your foot length.

How to measure foot length

  1. Tape a sheet of paper to a hard floor against a wall. Wear the socks you will wear with the shoes.
  2. Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall and your weight evenly on both feet.
  3. Have someone mark the tip of the longest toe with a pencil held straight up and down — for some people that is the second toe, not the big toe.
  4. Measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres or inches. Repeat for the other foot and use the longer one.
  5. Measure late in the day, when feet are at their largest. For a child, check every few months.

Why the systems don’t line up

UK and US sizes count in barleycorns (⅓ inch) from different starting points, so US men’s sizes run one above UK sizes. US women’s sizes run one and a half above US men’s in Nike’s chart, but only one above on some others, including the Brannock foot measurer. European sizes count Paris points (⅔ cm) of the shoe last, which is longer than the foot. Mondopoint (ISO 9407), used in Japan, China and Korea and for ski boots, simply states the foot length the shoe fits, in millimetres. Because the steps differ, each brand rounds the conversion its own way.

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t shoe sizes convert exactly between countries?

Each system counts in a different unit from a different starting point. UK and US sizes step by a barleycorn (⅓ inch), European sizes by a Paris point (⅔ cm) of the shoe last, and Mondopoint (used in Japan, China and Korea) by the foot length in millimetres. The steps don’t line up, so every brand rounds the conversion its own way — which is why charts differ by half a size or more.

Which size chart does this converter use?

The size rows reproduce Nike’s published men’s, women’s and kids’ footwear charts, one of the most widely used sports-brand charts, as they appeared in September 2026. That includes Nike’s own quirks, such as one UK size printed on two US sizes. Other brands, including European shoemakers, often label the same shoe half to one size differently, so check the brand’s chart when you can.

What is the difference between men’s and women’s US sizes?

In Nike’s chart a women’s US size is 1.5 above the men’s size for the same length, so a men’s 9 equals a women’s 10.5. Other charts, including the women’s scale on the Brannock foot measurer, add 1 instead, which is one reason women’s conversions vary between brands. UK and EU sizes are unisex.

Is the CM or JP size the same as my foot length?

Under the Mondopoint standard (ISO 9407) and Japan’s JIS S 5037 the size is the foot length the shoe fits, in millimetres or centimetres. But many brands print their own CM label, and Nike states that the CM on its boxes is not the foot length. This page shows both: the label from the chart and the Mondopoint value for the foot length you enter.

How do I measure my foot for shoe size?

Stand on paper with your heel against a wall, wearing the socks you will use, and mark the tip of the longest toe. Measure from the wall to the mark, do the same for the other foot and use the longer measurement. Measure in the evening, when feet are largest. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger.

How do kids’ shoe sizes work?

US children’s sizes start again from zero: C sizes run from 1C for babies to 13.5C, then big kids’ sizes restart at 1Y and run to about 7Y, which overlaps adult men’s 1–7. UK children’s sizes run to 13.5 before adult sizes begin at 1. Children’s feet grow quickly, so measure every few months and leave about a thumb’s width of room.

About this tool

This shoe size converter translates between US, UK, European (EU) and CM/JP sizes for men, women and kids, and turns a foot-length measurement into a size. Choose the chart, pick the system you know and your size, and the equivalents appear with the foot length the size is intended for. Enter your own foot length instead and the tool finds the smallest size that fits, following the common advice to size up when you fall between sizes.

The size rows come from Nike’s published footwear size charts for men, women and kids (nike.com size-fit pages, September 2026), reproduced as published rather than smoothed. That keeps the numbers tied to a real chart from one of the largest sportswear brands, but it also means Nike’s own irregularities are visible — a UK size that appears against two US sizes, or a CM label that is not the foot length. Nike itself notes that the CM printed on its boxes differs from foot length.

The underlying systems explain why charts never agree perfectly. UK and US sizes count barleycorns of ⅓ inch from different zero points; on the Brannock foot measurer, US men’s size is roughly three times the foot length in inches minus 22, and UK size is one less. European sizes count Paris points of ⅔ cm along the shoe last, which is longer than the foot. Mondopoint, set out in ISO 9407 and used in Japan under JIS S 5037, states the foot length itself in millimetres. ISO/TS 19407 publishes conversion formulas between these, yet sizes converted that way can come out half to one size smaller than comparable European-made shoes.

Treat every conversion as approximate. Lasts, materials and styles vary between brands and between models from the same brand, so a size that fits in one trainer can be tight in another. Measure both feet in the evening, use the longer one, compare it with the foot-length column of the brand you are buying, and check returns before you order online.
