How do I use a snowflake template?
Fold a square of paper in half along the diagonal, fold the triangle into thirds from the middle of the folded edge, then fold it in half once more so you have 12 layers. Cut the template out, lay it on the folded paper with the fold points together and the two dashed edges on the folds, cut off the top along the template and cut away every grey area through all the layers.
Why do these snowflakes have six points?
Snow crystals grow with six-fold symmetry because ice freezes into a hexagonal lattice, so real snowflakes have six arms, not four or eight. Folding paper into a 30° wedge of 12 layers repeats every cut six times around the centre and mirrors it within each arm, which gives the same symmetry. The fern and dendrite patterns even branch at 60°, like real stellar dendrites.
What size paper do I need?
Small templates measure 7 cm from the fold point to the top and need a square at least 15 cm wide, so standard 15 cm origami paper works. Medium (9.5 cm) needs a 20 cm square, which you can cut from an A4 or Letter sheet, and Large (13 cm) needs 27 cm. The page shows how many templates of each size fit on one sheet.
Which patterns are best for children?
Filter by Easy: those designs have a few large cuts that children's safety scissors can manage, and they work with ordinary printer paper. Medium designs have more and smaller holes. Tricky ones have thin branches and small holes cut through 12 layers, so they need thin paper, small sharp scissors and usually an adult's hands.
What is the colouring sheet?
The colouring pages show the finished, unfolded snowflakes as black outlines, one to six on a page, so children can colour them in or compare them with the ones they cut. Each outline is the exact shape the template makes, with its holes, and it is traced in your browser from the same design.
Can I change a pattern or make my own?

About this tool
A snowflake template takes the guesswork out of cutting paper snowflakes: instead of snipping at random, you lay a printed pattern on the folded paper and cut away the shaded parts. This page prints whole packs of them. Choose from 36 original snowflake patterns drawn for ZumaTools — from big simple stars for young children to lacy doilies, geometric honeycombs and dendrites that branch like real ice crystals — and the PDF lays them out at real size, as many to a page as fit.
Every template is the folded wedge itself, standing on its fold point: the two dashed blue edges are folds, the solid line at the top is the edge to trim, and the grey areas with a black outline are the pieces to cut away through all 12 layers. A small picture next to each template shows the snowflake it opens into, and the name and difficulty sit above it, so a stack of templates is easy to hand out to a class.
The optional first page explains the folding in four drawn steps: a square folded in half along the diagonal, into thirds at 60°, and in half again. That is the fold that gives six points; the common fold into quarters and eighths gives eight, which real snowflakes never have. A 5 cm bar on each page checks that the printer did not shrink the page — print at 100% or Actual size.
The colouring sheet turns the same designs into outline drawings, from one large snowflake to six per page, for quiet time after the cutting or for anyone too young for scissors.
