Why does my clip start a little before the time I typed?
The default fast cut copies the video data without re-encoding it. Compressed video is stored as keyframes, complete pictures, followed by frames that only describe changes, so a clip can only start cleanly on a keyframe. The fast cut starts at the nearest keyframe before your start time, which is usually within a second or two. Tick Frame-accurate cut and the clip is re-encoded so it begins on the exact frame, which takes longer and changes the file a little.
Does trimming reduce quality?
Not with the fast cut: the video and audio are copied exactly as they were, so the result is identical to that part of the original. The frame-accurate cut re-encodes to H.264 at a high quality setting (CRF 20) with 160 kbps AAC audio. The difference is hard to see, but it is a new encode, and the file size can come out larger or smaller than the original's share.
What format is the trimmed file?
The fast cut keeps the streams as they are and picks a container that can hold them: H.264, HEVC and AV1 video with common audio comes back as MP4, even from an MKV file, VP8 and VP9 WebM files stay WebM, and other MKV files stay MKV. AVI files, and every frame-accurate cut, come back as an H.264 MP4. Subtitles, chapters and metadata such as phone GPS tags are removed in both cases, and only the first audio track is kept.
How long can the video be?
Up to 5 minutes and 200 MB. This tool runs on a single shared server in Nuremberg, Germany, which handles one conversion at a time with a short queue and allows each visitor 10 conversions an hour. A fast cut finishes in a few seconds after the upload. A frame-accurate cut of a long 1080p clip takes longer, because the server deliberately runs the encoder at low priority.
Can I cut audio or make a GIF instead?
Yes. To cut an audio file such as an MP3, use Audio Cutter, which runs entirely in your browser. To take the soundtrack out of a video as an MP3, use the Video to MP3 converter. To turn a short part of a video into a looping animation, use Video to GIF.
About this tool
This tool cuts a video down to the part you want: the highlight of a match, the answer in a long screen recording, or a clip without the fumbling at the start. You type the start and end times rather than dragging handles, so the cut lands where you mean it, and a blank start or end keeps the beginning or the rest of the video.
There are two ways to cut. The fast cut copies the original video and audio streams into a new file without re-encoding, so it finishes almost instantly and loses nothing, but it can only start on a keyframe, which may be a second or two before your start time. The frame-accurate cut re-encodes the clip to H.264 so it starts on the exact frame, at the cost of more time and a new encode. Most uses, such as sharing a clip, are fine with the fast cut.
Unlike most tools on ZumaTools, this one runs on our server, because reading and rewriting video files in a browser is slow and unreliable for many formats. The video is uploaded to a server run by Hetzner in Nuremberg, Germany. The original is deleted as soon as the cut is finished, and the result is deleted automatically within one hour of the upload, or at once when you press Delete from server now. Files are used only to make your result and never for anything else.
Limits: videos up to 200 MB and 5 minutes, one conversion at a time on the server with a short queue, and 10 conversions per hour for each visitor. If the trimmed clip is still too large to send, run it through Compress Video. For audio files, Audio Cutter does the same job right in your browser.
