Frequently asked questions
Will converting to MP4 lose quality?
Often not at all. If the video is already H.264 with AAC or MP3 audio, which is common in MOV and MKV files, and you keep the original resolution, it is only repackaged into an MP4 container without re-encoding, so the picture is untouched and it finishes in seconds. Other videos, such as HEVC, VP9, AV1 or anything in an AVI file, are re-encoded to H.264. At High or Standard quality the difference is hard to see; Smaller file trades some detail for a smaller download. The result tells you which of the two happened.
What do High, Standard and Smaller file mean?
They set the H.264 constant quality level (CRF 20, 23 and 28). Standard suits most videos. High keeps more fine detail, such as text in a screen recording, and makes a larger file. Smaller file is noticeably softer but can be half the size of Standard or less. If you need the result under a particular number of megabytes, use Compress Video instead, which aims at an exact size.
Which formats and codecs can I convert?
MOV, M4V, MP4, WebM, MKV and AVI files, containing H.264, HEVC (H.265, the iPhone default), VP8, VP9, AV1, ProRes, DNxHD, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2, Motion JPEG and several older codecs, up to 4K. Audio in AAC, MP3, Opus, Vorbis, AC-3, E-AC-3, FLAC, ALAC or PCM is kept. Audio in any other codec is dropped, and the result says so.
What is kept and what is removed?
The first video track and the first audio track are kept, and phone videos keep their orientation. Audio that has to be converted becomes 160 kbps AAC stereo, so 5.1 surround is mixed down. Subtitles, chapters, extra audio tracks and metadata, including phone GPS location tags, are removed. Frame rates above 60 fps are reduced to 60 when the video is re-encoded.
Why is there a 200 MB and 5 minute limit?
This tool runs on a single shared server in Nuremberg, Germany, rather than in your browser. It handles one conversion at a time with a short queue, runs the encoder at deliberately low priority, and allows each visitor 10 conversions an hour. The limits keep waiting times short for everyone. A repackaged video takes seconds; a re-encoded 5-minute 1080p video can take several minutes.
About this tool
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the one video format that plays everywhere: on iPhones and Android phones, in every browser, on smart TVs and in chat apps. Screen recorders, cameras and download tools often produce MOV, WebM, MKV or AVI files instead, which some players refuse. This converter turns them into a standard MP4.
It avoids re-encoding whenever it can. Many MOV and MKV files already contain H.264 video, and for those the streams are copied into an MP4 container unchanged, which is lossless and nearly instant. Everything else is encoded to H.264 at the quality you choose, and audio is converted to AAC when it is not AAC already. Phone videos keep their orientation, and the file is prepared so it starts playing in a browser before it has fully downloaded.
Unlike most tools on ZumaTools, this one runs on our server, because converting video in a browser is too slow on most devices. The video is uploaded to a server run by Hetzner in Nuremberg, Germany. The original is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes, and the MP4 is deleted automatically within one hour of the upload, or at once when you press Delete from server now. Files are used only to make your result and never for anything else.
Limits: files up to 200 MB and 5 minutes, one conversion at a time on the server with a short queue, and 10 conversions per hour for each visitor.
