How big is the sweater grid?
The sweater is drawn on a grid 64 stitches wide and 50 rows tall, shaped like a jumper: a body 30 stitches wide, two sleeves and a crew neck. The collar, cuffs and hem are knitted as ribbing, and you can colour them too. The PNG is 1632 × 1296 pixels, with each stitch 24 pixels across.
What does the knit view show?
Each square of the grid is drawn as a knitted stitch — two slanted loops forming a V, with light and shade on the yarn — and the ribbed edges are drawn as raised and sunken columns, so the design looks like a real stockinette sweater. The Chart view shows flat coloured squares with a heavier line every 10 stitches, which is easier for editing and for knitters following it as a colourwork chart.
Can I actually knit this design?
You can use it as inspiration or a rough chart: each square is one stitch in the Chart view. Real knitted stitches are usually a little wider than they are tall, so a knitted version will look slightly squatter than the screen, and you will need to fit the chart to your pattern’s stitch count and gauge.
How does mirror mode work?
With Mirror on, everything you knit, erase or fill on one side is copied to the matching stitch on the other side of the centre line. Stamps are placed twice, with the second copy flipped, so two deer face each other. Text is never mirrored, because the letters would read backwards. Copy left half to right makes the whole design symmetric in one go.
What does the random ugly button do?
It builds a new sweater from a random mix of bands, a centre-piece (two deer facing each other, a big tree or a pair of snowflakes), sleeve motifs and odd polka dots, in a clashing set of eight yarn colours. Every design can be edited afterwards, and Undo brings back the one you had.
Is my design saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded. Your latest design is saved in your own browser, so it is still there when you come back, and the share link carries the whole design compressed into the part after the # sign, which browsers don’t send to a server.

Ugly Christmas sweaters are a festive tradition of their own: office parties, school jumper days and family photos all call for the loudest knit in the room. This maker lets you design one on screen before anyone picks up needles — or instead of it. The sweater is a grid of stitches in a jumper shape, and every change is shown as real-looking knitting, down to the ribbed collar, cuffs and hem.
Build the design from classic Christmas knitwear motifs, all drawn stitch by stitch for this tool: six-armed snowflakes, fir trees with a star, antlered deer, stars, hearts, candy canes, presents and Christmas puddings, plus repeating bands of zigzags, diamonds, dots, checks, trees and snowflakes. Two-colour stamps use a second yarn for details, like the stripes on a candy cane or the ribbon on a present.
Slogans are knitted in a chunky 5 × 7 stitch font with capital letters, numbers, a few punctuation marks and a heart. Mirror mode makes symmetrical designs easy, the way traditional colourwork is usually charted, and the flood fill, eyedropper, undo and redo work like a small pixel-art editor.
