What file format does the recorder save?
It uses the best format your browser can record: WebM audio with the Opus codec where available (Chrome, Edge, Firefox), otherwise M4A (AAC), which is what older Safari versions produce. The Download button shows which one you will get and the file size. Download WAV decodes that recording and writes a 16-bit PCM WAV at the original sample rate, which is several times larger but is accepted by virtually every editor, DAW and upload form.
Is there a time limit?
No fixed limit. The recording is written to memory in one-second pieces, and the running file size is shown next to the level meter. Compressed audio is small — WebM/Opus at the browser’s default bitrate is around 1 MB per minute — so hour-long recordings are practical. WAV conversion is refused above 1 GB (roughly three hours of mono audio at 48 kHz), because the browser must hold the whole decoded file in memory at once.
Should I leave Voice processing on?
For talking, yes. It turns on the browser’s noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain control — the same kind of cleanup video-call apps use — so hum and room echo are reduced and quiet speech is levelled. For music, singing or anything where you want the true sound and dynamics, turn it off before you start: the processing is designed for voices and can pump the volume or smear instruments.
Why do I get “Microphone access was blocked”?
Either the permission prompt was dismissed or blocked, or the operating system is denying your browser the microphone. Click the microphone or lock icon in the address bar and set microphone access to Allow. On Windows, also check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone; on macOS, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, then restart the browser.
What happens to my recordings if I close the tab?
They are gone. Recordings exist only in the memory of this tab and are never uploaded, so download every take you want to keep. The page asks for confirmation if you try to leave while recordings are in the list.
About this tool
This recorder captures audio from your microphone with the browser’s built-in MediaRecorder and keeps each take in a list on the page. While you record, a timer counts time actually recorded (pauses are not included), a level meter shows the loudness in dB against the digital maximum, and a scrolling waveform draws the signal so you can see immediately if the mic has gone quiet. Pause and Resume continue the same file rather than starting a new one, which suits reading a script in sections.
When you press Stop and save, the microphone is released straight away — the browser’s recording indicator goes off — and the take appears with its duration and size. You can play it back, rename it, delete it or record more; newest takes go to the top. The name you type becomes the file name, with characters that are not allowed in file names removed.
There are two download options. The original file is what the browser recorded — WebM (Opus) in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, M4A (AAC) in browsers that cannot record WebM — and the button names the format. It is compact and plays in browsers, VLC and most modern apps. Download WAV decodes the recording and re-encodes it as uncompressed 16-bit PCM WAV, the format that audio editors, transcription services and older software reliably accept. WAV does not add quality that was not captured — it only removes compatibility problems.
For a clean voice recording, get close to the microphone (a hand’s width to a forearm’s length), record in a room with soft furnishings, and make a short test take while watching the level meter: normal speech should sit in the middle of the bar without hitting the right end. If you have several microphones — a laptop mic, a headset and a USB mic, say — choose the one you want from the Microphone list before pressing Start; the list is locked while a recording is running.
