How do you play the white elephant dice game?
Everyone brings one wrapped gift and sits in a circle with the gifts in the middle. Players take turns rolling a die and doing what the number says — typically opening or taking a gift, swapping with a neighbour, passing every gift around the circle or stealing one. When the timer runs out, everyone keeps the gift they are holding. The rules table on this page lets you decide exactly what each number means.
What do the numbers mean in the classic rules?
The Classic preset uses: 1 = swap gifts with the person on your left, 2 = swap with the person on your right, 3 = open a gift or take one from the pile, 4 = everyone passes their gift one seat to the left, 5 = steal any gift from another player, and 6 = roll again. There is no official standard, so change any line to match the way your family or office plays.
Is there a version for kids without stealing?
Yes. The Kids (no stealing) preset replaces steals with gentler moves: pick a gift from the pile, pass your gift left or right, everyone passes left, trade with a friend who agrees, or roll again. Nobody loses a gift they were excited about, which keeps younger players happy.
How long should a white elephant dice game last?
Ten to fifteen minutes suits most groups of 8–15 people; with a large office party, 20 minutes gives everyone several turns. Pick 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes, press Start timer, and a short chime generated in your browser plays when the time ends. You can pause and reset the timer at any point.
Is the die fair, and is anything uploaded?
Each roll uses your device’s cryptographic random number generator with rejection sampling, so all six faces are exactly equally likely. The rules, player list and game length are saved only in this browser’s local storage, and the PDF is built on your device — nothing is sent to a server.

The white elephant dice game is a faster, rowdier take on the classic gift exchange. Instead of drawing numbers and deciding whether to steal, players take turns rolling a single die, and the number decides what happens: open a gift, swap with a neighbour, send every gift one seat around the circle, or steal the present you have had your eye on. When the timer ends, whatever you are holding is yours to keep.
This page is a complete kit for running the game. The rules table maps each face from 1 to 6 to an action you can edit freely, with three ready-made sets: Classic, a Steal-heavy variant for competitive groups, and a Kids version with no stealing at all. Your rules, player list and chosen game length are remembered in this browser, so next year’s party starts where you left off.

The die tumbles for about a second — or lands instantly if your device is set to reduce motion — and the action for that number appears in large text, with the current player’s name above it. The last 20 rolls are listed in the history, which settles any “wait, what did you roll?” debates. TV mode puts the die, the action and the timer on a dark full-screen view that is easy to read across a room; press Space to roll and N to pass to the next player.
