Where do the words come from?
From ENABLE2K, a public-domain word list of about 173,000 English words that is widely used by word games. The tool uses its 168,000-odd words of 2 to 15 letters, with a short list of slurs and profanity removed so results stay family-friendly. Words that are common in everyday English (those in the smaller levels of the SCOWL word lists) are shown in darker text and listed first.
Can I use it as an anagram solver?
Yes. Tick Must use all letters and the tool shows only words that use every letter you typed — “listen” gives enlist, inlets, silent and tinsel, for example. Leave it unticked to also see the shorter words hidden inside the letters.
How do ? wildcards work?
Each ? stands for any one letter, like a blank tile. A word only needs a wildcard for letters you don’t have, and the letters it fills are shown in blue with a dotted underline. You can use up to three wildcards; more would match almost every word in the list.
Why is a word I know missing?
The list covers standard English words of 2 to 15 letters, including plurals and verb forms, but not proper nouns, abbreviations, hyphenated words or very recent slang. Offensive words are deliberately left out. Different games accept slightly different word lists, so a word may be valid in one game and missing here.
Are my letters sent anywhere?
No. The first search downloads the word lists your letters need (a few kilobytes up to about 1.6 MB of plain text for 15 letters, split by word length), and all the matching happens in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
About this tool
This word unscrambler takes a jumble of letters and finds every English word they can spell. It checks each word in the list against the letters you typed, counting repeats — two Es in the word need two Es in your letters — and shows the matches grouped by length, longest first, so the best finds are at the top. Within each group, everyday words come first and rarer dictionary words follow in lighter text.
It doubles as an anagram solver. With Must use all letters ticked, only words that use every letter are shown, which is what you need for anagram puzzles, crossword clues that hint at an anagram, or checking whether a set of letters rearranges into a single word. The ? wildcard stands in for a blank tile or a letter you haven’t worked out yet, and the filled-in letters are highlighted.
Filters narrow a long list quickly: Starts with, Contains and Ends with accept any run of letters, and the minimum length hides two- and three-letter words when you only care about long ones. It’s useful for word jumbles in newspapers, letter-tile games, spelling-bee style puzzles and classroom word work.
The word list is ENABLE2K, which its authors placed in the public domain; the everyday-word marking uses SCOWL by Kevin Atkinson, whose copyright notice ships with the data at /data/words/LICENSE.txt. Slurs and profanity have been removed from the shipped list. The lists load in pieces by word length only when a search needs them, and every search runs locally in your browser.
