Frequently asked questions
How is the day and night line calculated?
The globe finds the subsolar point, the place where the Sun is directly overhead, from the Sun’s position in Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms and the Earth’s rotation. Every place 90° from that point is on the terminator. Sunrise and sunset are defined for the Sun’s upper edge touching the horizon, with the Sun’s centre 0.833° below it because of refraction, so the gold line is drawn there. The shading then darkens through the three twilights to full night once the Sun is 18° below the horizon.
Why is the day and night line curved and tilted?
The terminator is a great circle around the Earth, but because the Earth’s axis is tilted by about 23.4°, it only runs from pole to pole near the March and September equinoxes. In June the North Pole stays in daylight and the South Pole in darkness, and in December it is the other way round, so the line appears tilted and curved on the globe.
Where do the borders come from?
The country outlines, names and capitals come from Natural Earth’s 1:110 million scale data, which is in the public domain. Natural Earth shows borders as they are controlled on the ground, and marks some areas such as Western Sahara, Somaliland and Northern Cyprus separately; this does not imply any view on disputed territory. At this scale small island nations are not drawn, but you can still find their cities with the search.
Which time is shown for a country with several time zones?
The time shown is the time in the capital, with its offset from UTC and daylight saving time applied by your browser’s time zone database. When a country’s major cities use more than one offset, such as the United States, Russia, Brazil or Australia, the card also lists how many offsets they use and the range, so you know other regions will differ.
Does it work without WebGL?
Yes. The globe is normally drawn with WebGL, which uses your graphics chip. If WebGL is unavailable or switched off, it falls back to a simpler Canvas renderer that draws the same map, borders and day and night shading pixel by pixel, a little less sharply. If you have reduced motion turned on, the globe stops at once when you let go and moves to places without the flying animation.
About this tool
This interactive 3D globe shows the Earth with its countries, the line between day and night at the current moment, and the point where the Sun is overhead. You can turn and zoom it with a mouse, a finger or the arrow keys, tap any country for its capital and the local time there, and search more than a thousand cities. Everything runs in your browser; there is no plug-in or app to install.
The day and night shading is calculated for the exact time shown, not from a fixed picture. The subsolar point moves west by 15° of longitude every hour as the Earth turns, and north and south between the tropics over the year, reaching 23.44° N at the June solstice and 23.44° S at the December solstice. Moving the time slider shows how the terminator sweeps across the map, and why days are long in one hemisphere while they are short in the other.
The map data is Natural Earth’s 1:110 million scale set of 177 countries and territories, kept small so the globe loads quickly on a phone. Capitals come from the same source, with a few updated by hand, such as Astana for Kazakhstan and Dodoma for Tanzania. Their time zones come from GeoNames, and local times use the time zone rules built into your browser, including daylight saving time.
The globe is drawn as an orthographic projection, the view of the Earth from far out in space, in which exactly one half of the planet is visible at a time. Unlike a flat world map, it does not stretch the areas near the poles, so Greenland and Africa appear at their true relative sizes when each is turned to the centre.
