How tight is the timing?
Steps are not triggered by a JavaScript timer. A timer only wakes a scheduler every 25 ms, which books the next steps on the Web Audio clock about 0.12 seconds ahead, so each hit starts at an exact sample position. Step times are calculated from a fixed starting point rather than by adding up step lengths, so they cannot drift: in a simulated hour at 97 BPM they matched the exact grid to within a nanosecond. A tempo change takes effect from the next step that has not been booked yet.
What does swing do?
Swing delays every second sixteenth note. The percentage is the share of each pair of sixteenths taken by the first one: 50% is straight, about 67% is a triplet shuffle and 75% turns each pair into a dotted sixteenth and a thirty-second. Only steps on the off sixteenths move, so a pattern of straight eighth notes sounds the same at any swing. The WAV and MIDI exports use the same swing.
How do I share a beat or keep it for later?
Copy share link puts the whole pattern — steps, levels, tempo, swing, kit, volumes, mutes and solos — into the part of the address after the # sign, in about 90 to 154 characters. Anyone who opens the link gets the same beat; browsers do not send that part of an address to the website. Save in this browser keeps up to 30 named patterns in your browser's storage, and your current pattern is restored when you come back. Clearing this site's data deletes them.
What is in the WAV and MIDI files?
The WAV file is 16-bit stereo at 44.1 kHz. With Seamless loop on, it is exactly the chosen number of bars long and the ring-out of the last hits is folded back onto the start, so it loops in a sampler or editor without a gap or a cut-off cymbal; with it off, the file runs on until the last sound has died away. A 32-step pattern is always exported as whole two-bar loops. The MIDI file is a standard type-0 file on channel 10 with General MIDI drum notes — kick 36, side stick 37, snare 38, clap 39, closed hi-hat 42, open hi-hat 46, toms 50, 47 and 43, crash 49, ride 51 and cowbell 56 — at the pattern's tempo. Soft, normal and accented steps have velocities of 50, 90 and 120, scaled by the track's volume.
How do mute and solo work together?
M silences a track. S solos it: as soon as any track is soloed, only soloed tracks play, whether or not they are also muted. This lets you listen to the kick and snare on their own without losing your mute settings. The exports follow the same rule, so a muted or un-soloed track is left out of the WAV and MIDI files.
Can I use the beats I make here in my own music?
The sounds are synthesised by this page and the preset patterns were written for this tool, so an exported beat contains no samples or loops taken from other producers' records. The presets are standard genre rhythms — a four-on-the-floor kick for house, the kick-and-snare figure of the reggaeton dembow, eighth-note hi-hats with rolls for trap — meant as starting points to change.
About this tool
This beat maker is a step sequencer in the style of classic drum machines. The grid has twelve rows — kick, snare, clap, rim, closed and open hi-hat, three toms, crash, ride and cowbell — and 16 steps for one bar of 4/4 or 32 steps for two bars. Each step can be off, soft, normal or accented, which is enough to program ghost notes on the snare, accented hi-hats and the velocity patterns that make a groove feel played rather than typed.
The sounds are synthesised in the browser. The Electronic kit follows the analogue 808 and 909 recipes: a kick that sweeps down in pitch, a snare of tone and noise, metallic hi-hats from square-wave oscillators. The Acoustic kit models drum heads as a few decaying resonances and cymbals as clusters of inharmonic partials. Like a real hi-hat, a closed hi-hat chokes a ringing open one, which is what makes house off-beats and disco hats sound right.
Timing uses the same lookahead scheduling as a good metronome: every hit is booked on the audio clock before it is due, so the beat stays steady while you edit, and the playhead is shown when you hear the step rather than when it was scheduled. Tempo, swing, levels, mutes and kit can all be changed while the loop plays, and the loop keeps running in a background tab.
When a pattern is ready, the exports take it into other software. The WAV export renders 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars on your device, optionally folding the decay of the last hits back to the start for a seamless loop. The MIDI export writes the pattern as General MIDI drum notes with swing and velocities intact, so you can replace the sounds with any drum plug-in or sampler in a DAW. Nothing is uploaded; patterns are saved in your browser or in the link you share.
