How do I make a photo square for Instagram without cropping it?
Choose 1:1 square under Pad to aspect ratio. The tool adds your border, then widens the frame on the two shorter sides until the image is square, with the photo centered. Nothing is cut off. Use 4:5 for a portrait feed post or 9:16 for Stories and Reels. Set the border width to 0 if you only want the padding.
Why is the border width a percentage?
A percentage is measured on the shorter side of each photo. A 5% border therefore looks the same on a small phone snap and on a large camera file, which keeps a batch consistent. Switch the unit to px if you need an exact pixel width, for example for a print spec or a web layout.
Does adding a border reduce image quality?
The photo is drawn at its original pixel size and is never scaled or cropped. PNG output is lossless. JPG output is re-encoded at high quality, which makes a smaller file but can add slight compression artifacts. Metadata such as EXIF camera details and GPS location is not copied to the new file.
What is the difference between PNG and JPG here?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, so rounded outer corners stay see-through. JPG files are much smaller for photos, but JPG has no transparency, so any rounded corners are filled with white. Choose JPG for social media uploads and PNG when you need transparency or crisp graphics.
Can I add a border to many photos at once?
Yes. Drop several images at once, or use Add more images. Every setting applies to all of them. Click a file name to preview it, then press All as ZIP to download every framed image in one archive. Very large photos may exceed your browser’s canvas limit; if any fail, the tool tells you how many were left out.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The images are decoded and drawn on a canvas in your browser, and the files you download are created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe to use with private photos.
About this tool
This tool adds a frame around your photos in a few clicks. There are four border styles: a solid color, a two-color gradient at any angle, a double border with a gap between two lines like a picture mount, and a soft drop shadow that makes the photo look like a print on a background. The outer corners and the photo corners can be rounded separately, so you can make anything from a classic white print border to a rounded card with a shadow.
Padding to an aspect ratio is the feature most people come for. Social apps crop photos that do not fit their shape. Pick 1:1, 4:5, 3:4 or 9:16 and the tool extends the frame on the shorter sides until the image fits exactly. The whole photo stays visible and centered, with no cropping. Colors can be typed, picked from the image preview with one click, or set to the photo's average color for a frame that matches it.
Everything runs in your browser. Images are drawn onto an HTML canvas at their original resolution, and PNG or JPG files are encoded on your device. Nothing is uploaded. Batch mode applies the same settings to any number of photos and packs the results into one ZIP file, which is useful for a whole shoot, a product catalog or a set of carousel slides.
A tip for consistent results: set the width as a percentage rather than pixels when your photos differ in size, because pixel borders look thin on big camera files and thick on small ones. For white-border prints, 4–6% looks classic. For social posts that will appear on white or dark backgrounds, a very light gray or the photo's own average color often looks better than pure white or black.
