Frequently asked questions
- Will resizing distort my image?
- No. In Fit mode the aspect ratio is always preserved. In Cover mode the image is cropped from the center rather than stretched, so it never looks distorted.
- Can I enlarge an image?
- Yes, though enlarging cannot add real detail — a small image scaled up will look soft. For best results, resize down rather than up.
- What’s the difference between Fit and Cover?
- Fit scales the image to sit within your dimensions without cropping, so the result may be smaller in one direction. Cover delivers exactly the dimensions you enter by scaling and center-cropping. Use Fit for documents and email, Cover for thumbnails and profile images.
- Does resizing reduce the file size too?
- Dramatically. File size scales with pixel count, so halving width and height removes about 75% of the data before compression even begins. Resizing down is the most effective first step whenever a file is too large.
- Are my images uploaded to a server?
- No. All compression happens locally in your browser. Your images never leave your device, which also makes the process instant — there is no upload or download wait.
About this tool
Resizing changes the pixel dimensions of an image — the actual width and height of its grid of pixels. It is the single most effective way to reduce file size, because pixel count dominates everything else: halving both dimensions removes 75% of the data before compression even starts. It is also often a requirement in itself, when a website, print shop or CMS expects specific dimensions.
This tool offers two modes. Fit scales the image so it sits within the width and height you enter, preserving the aspect ratio — nothing is cropped and nothing is distorted. Cover produces exactly the dimensions you specify by scaling and then cropping evenly from the center, which is what profile pictures, banners and thumbnails usually need.
Downscaling is where resizing shines: a high-resolution photo reduced with proper resampling stays crisp, often looking sharper on screen than the browser-scaled original. Upscaling is the opposite — no algorithm can invent detail that was never captured, so an enlarged image will always look somewhat soft. When you have a choice, start from the largest original available and scale down, and always resize from that original rather than from a previously resized copy.
