How is the time until my birthday calculated?
The countdown runs to midnight at the start of your next birthday in your device’s time zone. The days figure is whole days left and the hours, minutes and seconds are the rest, so at midnight a week before it reads exactly 7 days, 00:00:00. Clock changes for daylight saving don’t throw it off, because it follows your wall clock rather than a fixed number of hours. On the birthday itself the page wishes a happy birthday all day, then counts to the next one from midnight.
When do people born on February 29 celebrate?
In the three years out of four with no February 29, there is no single answer. Some leap-day babies celebrate on February 28 so the birthday stays in February; others use March 1, the day after February 28. Laws that fix the date someone comes of age differ between countries. The tool asks which you use and applies it to the countdown, the age and the milestones. Leap years follow the Gregorian rule, so 2100 has no February 29 either.
How are days lived and the 10,000-day milestone worked out?
Days lived counts calendar days from your date of birth to today, so it is 0 on the day you are born and goes up by one each midnight. You are 10,000 days old about 27 years and 4 months after birth; the exact date depends on how many February 29ths fall in between, which is why the tool calculates it from your birth date rather than using a rule of thumb.
What does 1 billion seconds old mean?
A billion seconds is 11,574 days, 1 hour and 46 minutes, or about 31 years and 8 months. The tool counts from midnight at the start of your birth date because it doesn’t know the time you were born, so the real moment can be up to a day later. Two billion seconds arrives at just over 63 years and 4 months.
Is my date of birth sent anywhere?
No. The countdown is calculated in your browser. The shareable link keeps the date and name after the # sign, and browsers never send that part of an address to the website’s server. Saved birthdays are kept in your browser’s local storage on this device only, so they don’t follow you to another browser, and clearing site data removes them.
Can I use it as a birthday countdown on a TV?

About this tool
This birthday countdown answers the question everyone asks in the weeks before: how many days until my birthday? Enter a date of birth and it shows a live clock of the days, hours, minutes and seconds to the next one, the age you will turn and the day of the week it falls on. Add a name to count down to a friend’s or child’s birthday, and the heading changes to match, such as Sam’s 8th birthday.
Leap-day birthdays get proper treatment. Someone born on February 29 has a real birthday only once every four years, so the tool asks whether you celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in the other years and uses that choice for the countdown, the age and the milestones. It also shows the next real February 29. The leap-year rule is the full Gregorian one: 2000 had a February 29, but 2100 will not.
