Which country celebrates New Year first?
Kiribati. Its Line Islands, including Kiritimati (Christmas Island), are on UTC+14, so they reach midnight at 10:00 UTC on December 31. The Chatham Islands of New Zealand follow 15 minutes later, then New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga at UTC+13 in the southern summer. The last places are the uninhabited Baker and Howland Islands at UTC−12; the last inhabited ones are American Samoa and Niue at UTC−11, 25 hours after Kiribati.
How is the list of time zones worked out?
It uses the time-zone database built into your browser, the same IANA data your phone or computer uses to set its clock. For each place the page asks what the UTC offset will be at midnight on January 1 of that year, so summer time in Australia, New Zealand, Chile and elsewhere is taken into account. The list is then sorted by the moment the new year begins there.
Why don’t I hear the beeps?
Browsers block sound until you interact with the page, so press the Beeps button before midnight; you’ll hear a short test beep to confirm. The last ten seconds then beep once a second, with a higher tone for 3, 2 and 1 and a chord at midnight. The sounds are generated in your browser, so nothing needs to download, but the device mustn’t be muted.
Will the countdown be exact at midnight?
It follows your device’s clock, which phones and computers normally set automatically from network time, so it is usually within a second. The display changes on each whole second of your clock. Keep the tab in front and the screen awake: many browsers slow down or pause timers in background tabs, and a sleeping screen stops updating.
What happens after midnight?
The page shows Happy New Year for the whole of January 1 in your time zone, with a Celebrate again button for more confetti. At midnight on January 2 it starts counting down to the next year, so you can bookmark it and use it every year. The world list keeps showing the current New Year until January 1 has ended everywhere.
Can I test it before New Year’s Eve?
Yes. Rehearse the last 10 seconds sets the countdown as if it were 23:59:50 on December 31 and plays the finale: the big numbers, the beeps if they’re on, and the confetti and fireworks. It is a good way to check the volume and the screen before the party. The real clock takes over again after about 20 seconds, or when you press Stop rehearsal.
About this tool
This New Year countdown shows how long is left until midnight on January 1 where you are, as a live clock of days, hours, minutes and seconds. It counts in your device’s own time zone and follows the wall clock, so it stays right through daylight-saving changes and works for any year: once New Year’s Day is over, it simply starts counting to the next one.
New Year arrives in stages around the world, and the world list follows it. It starts with Kiribati’s Line Islands at UTC+14 and ends 26 hours later at UTC−12, and shows which places have already reached the new year, how long ago, what time it is there now and what your own clock will say when each place reaches midnight. The offsets come from your browser’s time-zone database for that particular year, so the list reflects summer time in the southern hemisphere, and your own zone is highlighted.
For a party, Big-screen party mode fills a TV or projector with a high-contrast countdown. In the final ten seconds the numbers grow to fill the screen, with a beep each second if you’ve turned beeps on, and at midnight confetti cannons and firework bursts go off by themselves. If your device asks for reduced motion, the celebration is shown as a still picture instead of an animation.
