How good can a 50 KB photograph look?
Better than most people expect. Fifty kilobytes supports roughly 600 × 600 pixels of JPEG at a quality level where compression is invisible at normal viewing size — comfortably more than the display size of an application photo. Problems appear only when a full-resolution phone photo is forced into the target without cropping, because the budget is then spread across millions of pixels.
The form wants a photo under 50 KB and a signature under 20 KB. Can one tool do both?
Yes — run them separately, since the two files behave very differently. A photograph is continuous tone and compresses smoothly. A signature is ink on paper: crop it tightly, drop it to grayscale, and it will fall far below its own limit without the softness a photograph would show.
Why does my photo look worse than the same size from my phone?
Phones apply sharpening and noise reduction before encoding, which makes their output compress efficiently. A screenshot, a re-saved copy or a photo already compressed once carries artefacts that the next pass has to encode as if they were detail — you pay twice. Always start from the best original you have.
Are the dimensions changed as well?
Only when necessary. Quality reduction is tried first, and dimensions are reduced only if the target is still out of reach. For portal uploads that is usually harmless: forms almost always specify a maximum file size and a minimum resolution far below what a modern camera produces.
