Is 500 KB always small enough for a website?
No. Ten images at 500 KB each add up to about 5 MB before fonts, scripts or other files. An individual image budget is only part of the page budget. Test the actual page on the connections and devices your visitors use.
Is 500 KB guaranteed for every file?
No. The search makes a bounded number of attempts. A result that is still over the target is labelled as such, and you can still download that best-effort file. Unsupported or very large images may fail because browser memory and format support are limited.
How is the target measured?
This tool uses 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, so 500 KB means 512,000 bytes. Some upload forms use decimal KB or a strict “less than” check. Compare their exact byte limit with the result; a file that meets this target may still exceed a stricter limit.
Does reducing file size preserve the original?
The original file is not modified. The download is a newly encoded image; compression may reduce colors, detail or dimensions. It does not preserve the original EXIF metadata. Check the exported copy before sharing it.
About this tool
A larger individual image budget can be appropriate for an image where detail matters, but it does not guarantee a fast page. Count every image loaded together. For example, one 500 KB image plus four 100 KB images totals 900 KB of image data.
For websites, compare formats your audience’s browsers support and resize to the display requirements before deciding how much compression to accept. For an email attachment or upload form, follow that destination’s accepted formats and total-size limit instead.
