Frequently asked questions

My mail server allows 2 MB. Why compress to 1 MB?
Because attachments do not travel as raw bytes. Mail encodes them in base64, which inflates the payload by about a third, and the stated limit usually applies to the encoded message. A 1.6 MB file can therefore bounce off a 2 MB limit. Leaving headroom is the difference between a delivered application and a silent rejection.
What actually makes a PDF large in the first place?
Images, in almost every case. A photograph pasted at full camera resolution, a logo embedded as a multi-megabyte PNG on each page, or a scan captured at 600 dpi will dominate the file. Text and vector graphics are negligible by comparison — a hundred-page text document is often smaller than a single uncompressed photograph.
How long a document can this handle?
One megabyte covers roughly thirty to forty scanned pages at a readable resolution, since each imaged page carries a floor cost of about 20 to 40 kilobytes. Beyond that the tool reports the smallest size it managed rather than returning something over the limit, and splitting the document becomes the sensible move.
Will the recipient notice the quality drop?
At this target, usually not on screen. One megabyte allows a resolution close to what a display can resolve, so the document reads normally in a PDF viewer. Printing is where the difference shows: a re-rendered page prints softer than the original, so send the uncompressed file when the document is going onto paper.
Are my documents uploaded for processing?
No. The rendering engine runs in your browser, the passes are measured on your device, and the download is produced locally. Nothing is transmitted — which matters for tender submissions and employment paperwork, and is also why a forty-page scan takes a few seconds of your own processor time.

One megabyte is the practical ceiling for anything you intend to email. It is comfortably inside the limits of corporate mail gateways, HR systems and tender portals, and it leaves room for the encoding overhead that catches people out: attachments travel base64-encoded, roughly a third larger than the file on disk, and the limit a mail server enforces usually applies to that encoded size. A file that fits on your disk can still bounce.
