How do I copy and paste an emoji?
Click the emoji. It is copied to your clipboard straight away, so you can paste it with Ctrl+V on Windows, Cmd+V on a Mac, or by pressing and holding in a text field on a phone and choosing Paste. If your browser blocks clipboard access, the emoji still goes into the text box under the grid, where you can select and copy it by hand.
Why do emoji look different on iPhone, Android and Windows?
An emoji is a Unicode character, not a picture. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung and others each draw their own artwork for every character, so the same emoji can look noticeably different from one device to the next. What you copy here is the standard character, and the person you send it to sees their own device’s design.
Why does an emoji show up as a box or a question mark?
The device showing it does not have that emoji in its font yet. Unicode adds new emoji every year, and phones and computers only get them with a system update, so the newest ones (the preview marks anything from Emoji 16.0 on) often appear as an empty box, a question mark or, for combined emoji like families and flags, as separate pieces side by side.
How do skin tones work?
Unicode defines five skin tone modifiers, from light to dark, based on the Fitzpatrick scale used in dermatology. Adding one straight after a hand or person emoji changes its tone. The selector applies your choice to every emoji that supports it; emoji without tone versions, such as faces and animals, stay in their default yellow or natural colours. For couples and groups, the same tone is applied to each person.
Where are my recently used emoji and favourites saved?
Only in this browser, using its local storage. Nothing is sent to a server or tied to an account, so they will not follow you to another device or browser, and clearing your browsing data removes them. Use the star in the preview to add a favourite, and the Clear recently used link to empty that list.
Which emoji are included?
All 1,923 fully-qualified emoji in Unicode Emoji 18.0, the current version, taken from Unicode’s official emoji-test.txt file, with skin tone variants folded into their base emoji. Search keywords come from the Unicode CLDR English annotations, which is why a search for lol finds the laughing faces.
About this tool
This page lists every emoji in the current Unicode standard and copies any of them with a single click. The emoji are grouped the same way Unicode groups them, in nine categories from Smileys & Emotion to Flags, and each one has a search entry built from its official name and the English keywords published in Unicode’s CLDR project. That means you can search for what an emoji is called (face with tears of joy), what people use it for (lol, haha) or a pasted emoji or code point such as U+1F600 to identify it.
Pointing at or focusing an emoji shows it large in the preview panel with its name, its code points, the Emoji version it was added in and its category. The code points are useful when an emoji misbehaves: many are made of several characters joined together, such as a skin tone modifier after a hand or a zero-width joiner between people in a family, and the preview shows exactly what you are copying.
Emoji are text, but each platform draws its own images, so a copied emoji keeps its meaning while its look changes from Apple to Google to Microsoft to Samsung. The newest emoji need an up-to-date operating system on the receiving end, so check before using a very recent one in a message that has to be understood everywhere. Older devices show a box or split a combined emoji into its parts.
