What size should a Discord emoji be?
Discord’s help article says custom emoji must be under 256 KB and can be JPEG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. Its developer documentation describes the upload as a 128 × 128 emoji image, so a 128 × 128 PNG is the natural target: it is the size Discord works with, keeps transparency, and at that size a PNG is always far below 256 KB. Discord shows emoji much smaller in chat — about 22 px inline and 48 px when a message is only emoji — so bold shapes read better than fine detail.
How do I add a custom emoji to my Discord server?
Open the server’s Server Settings, choose the Emoji tab and press Upload Emoji, then pick the downloaded PNG. You need to be the server owner or have the Create Expressions permission. Discord’s help article also describes Emoji Studio, reached through Add Emoji in the emoji picker on desktop and in the browser, which is rolling out gradually and is not available on mobile.
What are the rules for emoji names?
According to Discord’s help article, emoji names must be at least 2 characters long and can only contain letters, numbers and underscores. The name box here follows those rules and fixes the file name for you, turning spaces and symbols into underscores and removing accents, so “My Cool Pepe!.png” becomes My_Cool_Pepe.
How does the background removal work?
It is a colour key, not AI. Edge colour finds the most common colour around the border of your crop; Pick colour lets you click the background in the preview or choose a colour. Pixels close to that colour become transparent, with Tolerance setting how close and Edge softness fading the border smoothly. By default only background connected to the edges is removed, so a white face on a white background keeps its face. It suits logos and flat backgrounds; for photos, an AI background remover works better.
Can I make an animated emoji?
Not with this tool. A GIF is turned into a still emoji from its first frame. To keep the animation, upload the GIF to Discord directly — Discord’s help article says the same 256 KB size limit applies to animated custom emoji — and shrink or shorten it first if it is too large.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping, background removal, the outline and the PNG are all produced with the canvas in your browser, and the image never leaves your device. ZumaTools is not affiliated with Discord.

Framing matters more than resolution. Discord shows emoji at about 22 pixels inside a line of text and at 48 pixels when a message contains only emoji, so the tool previews both sizes on a dark and a light chat background. Zoom in until the subject fills the square, use padding if a round shape looks cramped, and prefer bold shapes and strong contrast over fine detail that disappears at small sizes.
Background removal is a simple colour key rather than AI. Pick the background colour, or let the tool read it from the image edges, then raise Tolerance until the background disappears and Edge softness until the border looks smooth. Removing only background connected to the edges protects parts of the subject that share its colour. An outline in white or another colour then traces the transparent edge, which keeps a dark emoji visible on Discord’s dark theme and a light one visible on the light theme.
