Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between light glitch, corrupted and cursed?
They glitch text in different ways. Light glitch adds at most one or two strokes, slashes or dots to some letters, so the text stays readable and the lines keep their normal height. Corrupted swaps letters for look-alikes from Cyrillic, Greek and accented Latin, repeats characters and splices in block characters such as ░ and ▓ — it looks like a damaged file rather than a haunted one. Cursed piles tall stacks of combining marks above and below every letter, which spills over the lines around it.
How is this different from the Zalgo text generator?
Cursed is the same technique as Zalgo text: combining marks stacked on each letter. The Zalgo generator gives finer control over that one effect, with up to 15 marks per letter and separate up, middle and down toggles. This page is for other glitch looks — the readable Light glitch and the Corrupted style, which relies on look-alike letters rather than stacked marks — plus an animated glitch image, which Zalgo does not make.
Will glitch text work on Discord, Instagram and TikTok?
Usually in messages, comments and captions, because the result is ordinary Unicode text. Name and bio fields are stricter: many apps strip or limit combining marks, so Light and Cursed text may arrive plain, and some reject certain symbols. Corrupted text uses real letters from other alphabets with few marks, so it survives strict fields more often. Very heavy Cursed text can also be clipped by the line above or below.
Why is my glitched text so long?
Every combining mark is a character of its own. At intensity 10, Cursed adds 20 to 44 marks to each letter, so a single word can pass 200 characters — enough to hit a 32-character Discord nickname or a 280-character post quickly. Light glitch adds at most two marks to a letter and Corrupted adds a few extra characters here and there, so both stay close to the original length. The counter under the result shows the exact total.
How is the animated glitch GIF made?
Your text is drawn on a canvas, then each frame is rebuilt pixel by pixel: the red and blue channels are shifted sideways against the green one (the RGB split), random horizontal slices are pushed left or right, every other pair of rows is darkened for scanlines, and grain is added. Glitch bursts make some frames much stronger than others, which gives the flicker its rhythm. The frames are encoded to GIF in your browser, and the preview uses the same frames as the file.
Can I remove glitch effects from text?
Yes — open Clean up glitched text and paste it in. It removes combining marks and block characters and turns look-alike letters back into plain Latin, which also works on Zalgo text from other sites. Letters that were deliberately repeated stay doubled, and accented letters typed as one character, such as é, are kept.
About this tool
Glitch text imitates the look of broken screens and damaged data. This generator makes it in two forms. The first is Unicode text you can paste anywhere text goes — messages, comments, captions and documents — in three styles that each break the letters differently. The second is an image: your words drawn on a canvas and put through the kind of distortion a failing video signal produces, exported as a looping GIF, a PNG or a PNG sequence.
The three text styles are built from different Unicode tricks. Light glitch uses overlay marks — strokes, slashes and tildes that draw through the letter — plus small dots, applied to a share of the letters that rises with intensity from about one in five to about four in five. Corrupted uses look-alike letters (the Cyrillic а and Greek ο in place of Latin a and o), stuttered characters and block elements, so it keeps a normal line height. Cursed stacks at least as many marks above and below each letter as the intensity number, and up to twice that plus two.
The animated effect has five controls. RGB split shifts the red channel one way and the blue channel the other, leaving red and cyan fringes; slice shift tears horizontal bands sideways; scanlines darken alternate row pairs like an old monitor; noise adds grain; and glitch bursts set how often a frame breaks up hard. A white word on a near-black background shows the colour fringing best, and a transparent background suits overlays for video, although GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges get a hard outline.
Everything runs in your browser. The GIF is encoded with up to 128 colours per frame; a 530 × 220 pixel word with 16 frames comes to roughly 150–300 kilobytes, depending on the effects. For editing in a video app, download the PNG frames instead — each frame is a lossless PNG, numbered in order, ready to import as an image sequence.
