What size are the hexagons?
The size is the distance across the flats — from one flat side to the opposite one — which is how hex maps and game boards are usually measured. A hexagon 1 inch across the flats has sides of about 0.577 inch (1 ÷ √3) and measures about 1.155 inches from point to point.
What is hexagon paper used for?
Tabletop role-playing and war games (hex maps where each hex is a distance or a day's travel), board-game prototypes, organic chemistry (drawing benzene rings and fused ring structures), quilting and English paper piecing plans, tiling and mosaic designs, and beehive or honeycomb art for kids.
Which way do the hexagons point?
They are flat-topped: each hexagon has a flat edge at the top and bottom, and columns of hexes interlock left to right. Turn the printed page 90° if your game uses pointy-topped hexes.
Why don't the hexagons reach the margin?
Only whole hexagons are drawn, and the block of hexes is centered on the page, so there are no cut-off half hexes at the edges. The spare space is split evenly on each side.
Can I use it for English paper piecing templates?
Yes, as a layout plan. Paper piecing templates are usually sized by side length, so for 1-inch-side hexagons choose a custom size of 44 mm across the flats (1 inch × √3 = 1.732 inches). Add seam allowance when you cut the fabric.
About this tool
Hexagon paper — hex grid paper — tiles the page with regular hexagons. Every hex has six neighbors at the same distance, which is why game designers use it: movement and range are the same in every direction, unlike a square grid where diagonal moves are longer. It is equally at home in a chemistry class, where rings of carbon atoms are drawn as hexagons, and in quilting and craft, where hexagons are a classic shape.
This page draws whole, flat-topped hexagons of an exact size, measured across the flats, centered inside the margins. Shared edges are drawn once, so the lines are clean and even, and the vector PDF prints sharply on any printer.
For a role-playing campaign, 1-inch hexes fit standard miniatures; smaller hexes such as ¼ or ½ inch map a whole region on a page. For chemistry, 1 cm hexes are a comfortable size for skeletal formulas. For a quilt, print the hex grid to plan colors, then count hexes of each color to buy fabric.
Tip: print a few sheets in light grey and use colored pencils for terrain or colors; the pale lines stay visible without overpowering the drawing.
