- Why does an A4 document need converting for the US at all?
- Because A4 is not a US paper size. A4 is 210 × 297 mm and US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches — Letter is about 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter. Printing A4 artwork on Letter paper leaves the printer to guess: it usually shrinks the page and adds uneven margins, and content close to the bottom edge can be clipped.
- Will anything be cut off?
- Not with the default Fit setting. Because Letter is a slightly different shape, fitting an A4 page inside it leaves thin white strips at the left and right rather than removing anything. If you choose Fill instead, the page is enlarged until it covers the sheet and the overflow is trimmed from the top and bottom — fine for image pages, risky for documents with footers.
- Does the text stay selectable?
- Yes. The original page is embedded and re-drawn at the new scale as vector content, so text remains real text — selectable, searchable and crisp at print resolution. Nothing is rasterised into an image, which is the usual reason converted PDFs come out blurry.
- Is it better to just tick “Fit to page” when printing?
- That works for a one-off print on your own printer, but it is a print setting, not a change to the file. Anyone else who opens the PDF still gets A4 dimensions, and print shops, submission portals and automated systems read the page size from the file itself. Converting once solves it everywhere.
- Is my document uploaded anywhere?
- No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser and the download is produced on your device. Your original A4 file is left untouched on disk.
About this tool
Almost every country outside North America uses A4, and the United States uses Letter — so documents crossing that line arrive at the wrong size. This tool converts an A4 PDF to US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches), rescaling each page so the document matches what American printers, print shops, courts and submission systems expect.
The two sizes are close but not compatible: A4 is 210 × 297 mm, Letter is 216 × 279 mm. Letter is slightly wider and noticeably shorter, and their aspect ratios differ (about 1:1.414 against 1:1.294). No single scale factor turns one into the other, which is why conversion always involves either a small margin or a small crop. The default here is Fit, which keeps every element on the page and accepts narrow white strips at the sides — the safe choice for contracts, invoices and forms.
Rescaling is vector-based. The original page is embedded and drawn at the new size rather than rendered to a bitmap, so text stays selectable and searchable, thin lines stay sharp when printed at 600 dpi, and file size does not balloon. Tools that flatten pages to images are the reason converted PDFs so often look soft and stop being searchable.
It is worth knowing what this does not fix. Converting the page size does not reflow text — a paragraph that ended awkwardly on A4 ends the same way on Letter, just scaled slightly differently. If a document needs genuine reformatting for Letter, that belongs in the program that created it.
