- Why convert Letter to A4?
- Because A4 is the standard almost everywhere outside the United States and Canada, and plenty of systems insist on it: European and Asian print shops, university submission portals, government e-filing systems, visa and grant applications. A Letter-sized file sent into an A4 workflow either gets rescaled unpredictably or rejected outright.
- Will content be cropped?
- Not with the default Fit setting. A4 is taller and narrower than Letter, so fitting a Letter page into it leaves slim white bands at the top and bottom rather than cutting anything. Fill is the alternative: it enlarges the page to cover the sheet and trims the left and right edges, which suits full-bleed image pages but can clip a document’s side margins.
- How different are the two sizes really?
- US Letter is 216 × 279 mm; A4 is 210 × 297 mm. So A4 is 6 mm narrower and 18 mm taller — a visible difference when the pages are laid on top of each other, and enough to matter for anything printed near an edge. Their proportions differ too, which is why the conversion cannot be an exact match.
- Does the file stay searchable?
- Yes. Pages are embedded and re-drawn as vector content at the new scale, so text is still text — selectable, searchable and sharp when printed. Nothing is converted to a bitmap, so the file does not get blurry or balloon in size.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The whole conversion happens in your browser and the download is generated locally. Your original file is not modified.

US Letter and A4 divide the world between them, and documents that cross the line arrive at the wrong size. This tool converts a Letter PDF to A4 (210 × 297 mm), rescaling every page so the file matches what printers, print shops and submission systems expect nearly everywhere outside North America.
The sizes are close enough to look interchangeable and different enough to cause trouble. A4 is 6 mm narrower and 18 mm taller than Letter, and the aspect ratios do not match — roughly 1:1.414 against 1:1.294. Because no single scale factor maps one onto the other, conversion means choosing between a small margin and a small crop. Fit is the default and the right answer for documents: it keeps every element and leaves thin white bands at the top and bottom.
The rescaling is vector-based rather than a render to bitmap. The original page is embedded and drawn at the new scale, so text stays selectable and searchable, hairlines stay clean at print resolution, and the file does not swell. This is the difference between a converted PDF that still behaves like a document and one that has quietly become a stack of pictures.
Worth setting expectations: changing page size scales the layout, it does not reflow it. Line and page breaks stay exactly where they were, so a document designed for Letter will look like a slightly scaled Letter document on A4 — correct dimensions, same composition.
