How do I make a GIF smaller?
File size grows with pixel count and frame count, so the output width is the biggest lever: halving the width cuts the pixels per frame to a quarter. After that, choose Shared by all frames under Palette, which writes one color table instead of one per frame, and lower Colors per palette to 64 or 32. Removing near-duplicate frames helps too. The tool shows the exact file size after each attempt so you can compare.
What frame delay should I use?
The delay is how long each frame stays on screen. 500 ms (2 frames per second) suits slideshows of photos; 100 ms (10 fps) gives smooth motion for screen recordings or sequences shot in burst mode. GIF stores timing in hundredths of a second, so delays are rounded to the nearest 10 ms, and the tool does not go below 20 ms because browsers play near-zero delays at about 100 ms instead. Leave a frame's own delay box empty to use the default, or type a value such as 2000 to hold a title card or the last frame longer.
Can I make a GIF that plays only once or a set number of times?
Yes. Under Looping choose Loop forever, Play once, or Play a set number of times and enter the total number of plays. The count is written into the GIF's loop setting, which Chrome, Firefox and Safari follow. Some chat apps and social sites ignore that setting and loop every GIF, so a play-once GIF may still repeat there.
Why do my photos look grainy or banded in the GIF?
A GIF frame can hold at most 256 colors, while a photo contains many thousands. The tool picks the best 256 (or fewer) colors for each frame and maps every pixel to the nearest one, without dithering, so smooth gradients like skies can show visible bands. Keep Colors per palette at 256 and Palette at One per frame for the most accurate photo colors; flat graphics, screenshots and text survive the reduction far better than photos.
Can I use images of different sizes, or make a transparent GIF?
Yes to both. Every frame is scaled to the same output size: Fit shows each whole image and fills the leftover space with your background color, while Cover fills the frame and crops what overflows. Tick Transparent to leave that space — and any transparent areas of PNG or WebP frames — see-through. GIF transparency is on-or-off per pixel, so soft semi-transparent edges become either fully opaque or fully clear.
About this tool
This GIF maker turns a set of still images into an animated GIF. You can add up to 200 frames from PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF files, reorder them by dragging or with arrow buttons, reverse the sequence, or sort it by file name so exported frames like frame-2 and frame-10 land in the right order. Clicking a thumbnail shows that frame in the preview, and the preview plays the animation using the exact delays that will be written into the file. If you add an animated GIF, only its first frame is used.
Timing works on two levels. A default delay applies to every frame, and any frame can override it — useful for holding the first or last image, or pausing on a key step in a tutorial. The looping setting writes the loop count into the file, so you can make a GIF that repeats forever, plays once and stops, or plays a fixed number of times. The page shows the frame rate of the default delay and the length of one full loop as you edit.
Output size is set by a width of 16 to 1,200 pixels and a shape: the first image's proportions, square, 4:3, 16:9 or vertical 9:16. Images that don't match are either fitted inside with a background color or transparent padding, or cropped to cover the frame. Colors are reduced with the gifenc encoder's quantizer to 16–256 colors, either with a separate palette per frame for accuracy or one palette shared by every frame for a smaller file.
Encoding runs frame by frame in your browser with a live progress bar and a Cancel button, and the page stays responsive while it works. When it finishes you see the actual GIF, its exact file size and dimensions, and a note if you have changed anything since it was made. Nothing is uploaded: the images are read, resized and encoded on your own device.
