Frequently asked questions
Is a PDF signed this way legally binding?
Often, yes. In the US, the ESIGN Act and UETA give electronic signatures the same legal effect as handwritten ones for most transactions when the parties agree to sign electronically. In the EU, eIDAS says a signature cannot be refused as evidence just because it is electronic; what this tool produces is a simple electronic signature, not the advanced or qualified kind. Some documents — wills, certain property and court papers, anything that must be notarised — have stricter rules, and a counterparty can insist on its own signing process. Is this a digital signature?
No. It places an image of your signature — plus any dates and text you add — onto the page. There is no certificate, no cryptographic seal and no audit trail recording who signed and when, so the PDF can still be edited afterwards and nothing proves your identity. If a government portal, tender or employer asks for a certificate-based digital signature, you need a signing certificate and software that applies it.
Is my document or signature uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened, displayed and saved entirely inside your browser, and your signature is drawn and stored only in the open tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the signature. That matters here more than for most tools: a contract and a copy of your signature are exactly what you do not want sitting on someone else’s computer.
Will signing change the rest of my PDF?
No. The original pages are kept exactly as they are — text stays selectable and searchable, vector graphics stay sharp, and nothing is converted to images. Your signature and text are drawn into the page content, so they show in every PDF reader and when printed. One thing to watch: a fillable form field sits on top of the page, so if you place a signature directly over one, the field may hide it. Put the signature on the line next to the field instead.
Why does it say my PDF is encrypted?
Some PDFs are encrypted — either they need a password to open, or the author set restrictions that block editing even though they open without one. Writing a signature into an encrypted file would damage it, so the tool stops rather than produce a broken PDF. Can I initial every page at once?
Yes. Create your initials with + Initials, place them once, and choose Copy to all pages while they are selected. A copy goes onto every other page at the same relative spot, so landscape and portrait pages both line up. Each copy can then be moved or deleted on its own. Duplicate does the same thing on the current page, which is handy for forms that ask for a signature in two places.
About this tool
This tool signs a PDF without printing, scanning or installing anything. Open the document, create your signature once, and place it wherever it is needed: on the signature line of a contract, next to each clause of a lease, or on every page of a form that asks for initials. You can also add the date in the format the document expects and free text boxes for a printed name, a job title or a reference number, so the whole signature block is filled in one pass.
There are three ways to make the signature. Draw it with a mouse, trackpad, finger or stylus, with the line smoothed so it looks like ink rather than a jagged trace; choose the pen colour and thickness to match a real pen. Type your name and pick one of several script styles, which use handwriting fonts already installed on your device. Or upload a photo or scan of your signature on paper — the tool works out the paper colour from the edges of the image, makes it transparent and keeps the ink, with a strength control for shadows and grain.
Placement works the way you would expect on any screen. Click or tap to drop an item, drag to move it, pull the corner handle to resize and the top handle to rotate. Every item can also be operated from the keyboard: Tab to it, move with the arrow keys, resize with plus and minus, rotate with the square brackets, and remove it with Delete. Pages with an unusual size, a crop box or a built-in rotation are handled correctly, so a signature lands exactly where you put it.
When you save, the tool writes your items into a copy of the original file rather than rebuilding it from pictures, so the document stays sharp, searchable and small. Be clear about what this is: a visual electronic signature, the everyday kind that is widely accepted for leases, permission slips, invoices and routine agreements, not a certificate-based digital signature with identity checks and a tamper seal.
