Frequently asked questions
- How do I move a page a long way through the document?
- Press the arrow repeatedly — each click swaps the page with its neighbour, and the list scrolls with it. For a page that needs to travel a long distance in a big document, the extract pages tool is often quicker: type the full order you want, such as 1, 14, 2-13, and get it in one step.
- Can I use this to reverse a whole document?
- For a few pages, yes, by moving each one. For a long file, use the extract pages tool and type the range backwards, such as 40-1, which reverses everything at once. That is the usual fix for a double-sided stack that came out of the scanner in the wrong direction.
- Are the page numbers printed on the pages updated?
- No — reordering moves the pages themselves, but any numbers already printed onto them are part of the page image and move with it. If you need the numbering to match the new order, reorder first, then run the file through the add page numbers tool to stamp fresh numbers on top.
- Does reordering affect quality or searchable text?
- Not at all. Pages are copied whole, with their fonts, text, vector graphics and images unchanged, so the document stays sharp and its text stays selectable and searchable. Only the sequence changes.
- Is my file sent to a server?
- No. Your browser reads the PDF, rebuilds it in the new order and produces the download locally. The file never leaves your device, and your original stays exactly as it was on disk.
About this tool
Pages end up in the wrong order for ordinary reasons: a scanner fed the sheets out of sequence, an appendix belongs at the back rather than the front, a signature page needs to follow the clause it signs, or someone merged two documents in the wrong order. This tool lists every page and lets you move them until the sequence is right, then hands you the rebuilt PDF.
It works by page, not by thumbnail, so it stays fast and predictable even on long documents — the list shows the original page numbers, and the position column shows where each one will land. When a page has to travel a long way, the extract pages tool is the better instrument: type the full order you want, like 1, 14, 2-13, and get the result in a single step rather than a dozen clicks.
Rebuilding is lossless. Each page is copied across with its embedded fonts, vector content and images untouched, so the new file is as sharp as the original and its text remains selectable and searchable. Nothing is rasterised, and file size stays essentially the same.
One thing worth knowing before you start: numbers already printed on the pages do not renumber themselves, because they are part of the page. The usual sequence is to fix the order here first, then stamp fresh numbering with the add page numbers tool. Both steps run in your browser, so the document never gets uploaded anywhere along the way.
