What are the federal holidays in 2027, and which days are off?
The 11 federal holidays of 5 U.S.C. 6103. In 2027 three fall on a weekend, so the day off moves: Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19) is observed on Friday, June 18, Independence Day (Sunday, July 4) on Monday, July 5, and Christmas (Saturday, December 25) on Friday, December 24. New Year’s Day 2028 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027 — giving 2027 twelve federal days off.
What is the difference between a holiday and an observance?
A federal holiday is a legal public holiday: federal offices close, federal employees get the day off, and most banks close. An observance such as Mother’s Day, Flag Day or Halloween is widely marked but is not a day off for anyone by law. On the calendar, observances are grey and never marked as days off.
When does daylight saving time start and end in 2027?
Clocks go forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2027 and back at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2027 — the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, as set by the Uniform Time Act as amended in 2005. Hawaii and most of Arizona don’t change their clocks.
Is Election Day on the 2027 calendar?
No. Federal elections are held in even years, on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November; the calendar adds Election Day in those years (November 3, 2026 and November 7, 2028). Some states and cities hold elections in odd years too, so check your state’s election calendar for 2027.
Are state holidays included?
No. States set their own holidays — for example Cesar Chavez Day in California, Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts and Maine, Mardi Gras in Louisiana or the day after Thanksgiving in many states — and state offices often close on days federal ones don’t. Add them by hand; Good Friday, observed by stock markets and some states, isn’t shown either.

Federal holidays are calculated from 5 U.S.C. 6103 and the observed-day rules for federal employees (a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before, a Sunday one on the Monday after) and match the OPM federal holiday schedule. Observances follow their own rules: Mother’s Day is the second Sunday of May, Father’s Day the third Sunday of June, Easter comes from the Gregorian Easter calculation, and daylight saving time runs from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November.
Keeping the two groups visually apart matters on a work calendar: a manager planning shifts needs to know that December 24, 2027 is a federal day off but that Halloween is not, and a family calendar wants Mother’s Day without implying anyone has the day off.
