When does the 2027 leave year start and end?
Leave year 2027 begins on Sunday, January 10, 2027 and ends on Saturday, January 8, 2028. A federal leave year starts on the first day of the first full biweekly pay period in the calendar year, so it rarely lines up with January 1. It has 26 pay periods.
Which pay period covers January 1–9, 2027?
Pay period 26 of leave year 2026, which runs from Sunday, December 27, 2026 to Saturday, January 9, 2027. Hours worked and leave taken in those days count toward the 2026 leave year, which is why the calendar labels it “PP 26 (2026)”.
What is the use-or-lose deadline for 2027?
OPM lists Saturday, November 27, 2027 — the last day of pay period 23 — as the deadline for scheduling use-or-lose annual leave. Leave above your carryover limit that is still unused when the leave year ends on January 8, 2028 is forfeited; it can be restored later only if it was scheduled in writing before the start of the third pay period before the end of the leave year (so by November 27) and then cancelled because of an exigency, illness or administrative error. Your agency’s HR office has the forms and its own internal deadlines.
Why doesn’t the calendar show federal pay dates?
Because they are not the same across government. Pay periods are the same for every agency on the standard biweekly cycle, but the payday for each period is set by the agency’s payroll provider — the USDA National Finance Center, DFAS, the Interior Business Center or GSA — and usually falls about a week after the period ends. Your provider’s own payroll calendar has the exact dates.
How were the dates checked?
The periods are calculated as an unbroken two-week cycle anchored on pay period 1 of 2027, which starts January 10, 2027. The results match OPM’s published leave year beginning and ending dates for every year from 2012 to 2030 — including the 27-pay-period leave year 2023 — and the National Finance Center’s 2027 pay period calendar (form NFC-1217).
About this tool
Federal employees on the standard biweekly schedule work in two-week pay periods that run Sunday through the second Saturday. Timesheets, leave accrual — 4, 6 or 8 hours of annual leave per pay period depending on service — and the use-or-lose deadline all count in pay periods, so a calendar with the numbered periods on it is more useful than a plain one for planning leave or tracking hours.

On the printed calendar each period’s first Sunday is outlined, the list under the months gives every period with its start and end dates, and the federal holidays are circled — with the Friday or Monday off shown when a holiday falls on a weekend, as it does for Juneteenth (observed Friday, June 18), Independence Day (observed Monday, July 5) and Christmas (observed Friday, December 24) in 2027. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027, inside pay period 26.
