If ChatGPT isn’t working for you

When the live checks above look normal, the problem is usually on your side or limited to one feature. These are the fixes that help most often with ChatGPT:

  1. Check the right ChatGPT component

    OpenAI’s status page splits ChatGPT into separate components, including Conversations, Login, File uploads, Voice mode, Image Generation, Search, Deep Research, Agent and GPTs. If only one feature is broken, check that component rather than the overall banner — partial outages often hit just one of them.

  2. “Something went wrong” errors

    This general error can mean a temporary server problem or a problem on your side. If a reply hangs, wait 30–60 seconds, stop generating, then use Regenerate. If it happens in every browser, device and network, check the status page and then contact OpenAI support.

  3. Allow cookies for the right domains

    Signing in needs cookies and JavaScript allowed for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com. Clear the cookies for those sites, or try a private window or a clean browser profile, then sign in again.

  4. VPNs, proxies and network errors

    Network errors usually mean your device can’t keep a reliable connection to OpenAI’s servers. Turn off VPNs or proxies, which can route you through flagged IP addresses, and try another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.

  5. Web vs. app

    If chatgpt.com fails but the desktop or mobile app works, or the other way round, the problem is probably local: extensions, cache, or an out-of-date app. Update the app, turn off browser extensions, and compare before assuming an outage.

  6. Usage limit, not an outage

    Some models and tools have usage limits that reset after a set time, and ChatGPT tells you when you reach one. On the Free plan, chats move to a smaller model until the limit resets. File uploads, image generation, voice and other tools have their own separate limits.

Is ChatGPT down or is it just me?

Check whether the OpenAI status page shows an incident for the ChatGPT component you use, and whether other people are reporting the same problem. This page combines the official status page, our own reachability checks every minute and user reports. If all of them look normal, try another browser, network or device.

Why does ChatGPT say I’ve hit a limit when it isn’t down?

Limits depend on your plan and apply per model and per tool, for example image generation or file uploads. ChatGPT shows when your limit resets. That is expected behaviour, not an outage.

Does the OpenAI status page cover both ChatGPT and the API?

Yes. status.openai.com has separate groups for APIs, ChatGPT, Codex and more. The API can be healthy while a ChatGPT component has a problem, or the other way round, so check the group that matches what you use.

ChatGPT is stuck on login. What should I do?

Check the Login component on the status page first. If it’s operational, allow cookies for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com, turn off any VPN, and try a private window.
