If Grok isn’t working for you

When the live checks above look normal, the problem is usually on your side or limited to one feature. These are the fixes that help most often with Grok:

  1. Check the right component

The official status page lists Grok on the web, on iOS, on Android and in X separately, plus each xAI API region. An incident can hit only one of them, so Grok in X may be down while grok.com still works. Look at the component you actually use before assuming everything is down.

  2. Usage limit or outage?

If you reach your plan’s usage limit, Grok’s paid features pause until the limit resets while basic chat keeps working. That isn’t an outage — wait for the reset, or add usage or upgrade your plan.

  3. Sign in with the same method you subscribed with

If Grok doesn’t recognise your subscription, sign in with the method you used to buy it — for example Sign in with Apple if you subscribed through Apple with a private-relay email. To link X Premium benefits, connect your X account in the account settings on grok.com.

  4. Clear the session on grok.com

For login or loading problems on the web, sign out, clear the cookies and cache for grok.com, or try a private window. In the mobile app, force-close and restart it, or sign out and back in. xAI recommends Chrome or another Chromium browser for full feature support on grok.com.

  5. API errors (developers)

The xAI API returns 401 when the authorization header is missing or the key is invalid, and 429 when you’re sending requests too frequently for your rate limit — slow down, or raise your limit in the xAI Console. 5xx errors, or errors across many models at once, point to an incident, so check the API region you use on the status page.

Questions about Grok outages

Is Grok down or is it just Grok in X?

They’re separate components on status.x.ai. Grok inside X depends on both X and Grok, so it can fail while grok.com and the apps still work, or the other way round. This page combines the official status page, our own reachability checks every minute and user reports.

Why can’t I use Grok’s advanced features even though grok.com loads?

You’ve most likely reached your plan’s usage limit, which pauses paid features until the reset. Basic chat stays available.

Does xAI publish an incident feed?

Yes. The official status page has an RSS feed at status.x.ai/feed.xml, listing incidents per component and API region.

Is the xAI API affected when grok.com is down?

Not always. The API is split into regions, each with its own status. Some incidents, such as datacenter problems, have hit the API and grok.com at the same time, so check both.

How this page decides

The answer at the top combines three signals: what xAI reports on its official status page, our own check that Grok is reachable (every minute, with response time), and reports from people on this page. Problems are flagged when the official source reports an incident, our checks start failing, or reports rise well above the usual level for Grok. It’s an independent page — not affiliated with xAI.
