If ElevenLabs isn’t working for you

When the live checks above look normal, the problem is usually on your side or limited to one feature. These are the fixes that help most often with ElevenLabs:

  1. Find the right component on the status page

    ElevenLabs lists Text to Speech, Speech to Text, Conversations, Telephony, the UI and other API endpoints as separate components. If only one is degraded, the rest can still work — voice agents can fail while plain text to speech is fine.

  2. Out of credits looks like an outage

    If generation stops partway through your billing cycle, check your remaining credits first. Credits reset only after the subscription payment goes through. Over the API, running out of credits returns HTTP 402.

  3. API 429: concurrency limit or system_busy

    ElevenLabs returns 429 in two cases: too many simultaneous requests for your plan, or system_busy, which means ElevenLabs is under heavy load. Only system_busy points to their side — retry it with backoff. A concurrency 429 means you should queue your own requests.

  4. “Unusual activity detected” on the free tier

    This message comes from ElevenLabs’ abuse detection on free accounts, not an outage. It’s often triggered by a VPN, proxy or shared IP address (school, office, mobile network) that someone else also used for a free account. A unique IP or a paid plan avoids it.

  5. Client-side error in the web app

    A client-side error on the ElevenLabs website is usually caused by cached data or by a browser translation tool such as Google Translate. Turn translation off and hard-refresh. If it appears after you clicked Generate, check History — the audio has often been created already.

Is ElevenLabs down or is it just my account?

Check status.elevenlabs.io and look at the component you’re using. If everything is operational, the cause is usually credits, the free-tier abuse filter or your browser. This page combines the official status page, our own reachability checks every minute and user reports.

Why do I get a 429 error from the ElevenLabs API?

Either you went over your plan’s limit on simultaneous requests, or ElevenLabs returned system_busy because of high traffic. For the first, queue or throttle your requests or move to a plan with higher concurrency; for system_busy, retry with backoff.

When do my ElevenLabs credits reset?

Credits reset once your subscription payment has been processed, on the same day each month. The new balance can take a little while to appear.
