If Claude isn’t working for you

When the live checks above look normal, the problem is usually on your side or limited to one feature. These are the fixes that help most often with Claude:

  1. Check the claude.ai component

    Anthropic’s status page lists claude.ai separately from the Claude API, Claude Console and Claude Code. If the app isn’t working, look at the claude.ai component specifically.

  2. “Due to unexpected capacity constraints…”

    This message means Claude is temporarily under heavy load. Try again in a few minutes. Anthropic treats these short capacity issues as normal load management, so they don’t always appear on status.claude.com.

  3. Hit your usage limit

    Claude warns you as you approach your usage limit and then blocks new messages until the reset time it shows. Paid plans also have weekly limits, and you can see your usage under Settings > Usage.

  4. Message or chat too long

    A message saying you’ll exceed the length limit for this chat is about the size of the conversation, not an outage. Split the content into smaller parts, attach fewer or smaller files, or start a new chat.

  5. Login errors

    If signing in fails, turn off your VPN and browser extensions, then clear the cache and cookies for claude.ai. If it still fails, check status.claude.com for an active incident.

Is Claude down or is it just me?

Check the claude.ai component on status.claude.com and see whether others are reporting problems. This page combines the official status page, our own reachability checks every minute and user reports. If everything looks normal, try another browser or network and turn off your VPN.

Why does Claude say it’s at capacity when the status page is green?

Capacity messages are temporary load management and aren’t always posted on the status page. Wait a few minutes and try again.

Why does Claude say I’ve hit a limit when it isn’t down?

Claude has a rolling session limit and, on paid plans, weekly limits. Usage depends on message length, attached files, conversation length and the model or features you use. The limit message tells you when you can continue.

Does status.claude.com cover the app and the API?

Yes. It lists claude.ai, Claude Console, Claude API (api.anthropic.com), Claude Code and other products as separate components. One can have an incident while the others work normally.
