If DeepSeek isn’t working for you

When the live checks above look normal, the problem is usually on your side or limited to one feature. These are the fixes that help most often with DeepSeek:

  1. “The server is busy. Please try again later.”

    This is the most widely reported DeepSeek chat error. It usually means the service is overloaded, not fully down. Wait a moment and send the message again — it often works on the second or third try. If it doesn’t, start a new chat with DeepThink and Search turned off.

  2. Only search prompts fail

    Web search runs as its own service. If only search-enabled prompts fail, turn off Search and ask again. The status page lists the search service separately from the chat service.

  3. Check the right component on the status page

    status.deepseek.com lists the chat, file upload and search services and each API model separately. A failing API model doesn’t mean the chat app is down, and the other way round.

  4. API 503, 500 or 429 errors

    According to DeepSeek’s API docs, a 503 means the server is overloaded due to high traffic and a 500 is a server error; retry both after a short wait. A 429 means you’re sending requests too fast for your account’s limits.

  5. API 401 or 402 errors are account problems

    A 401 means authentication failed because the API key is wrong. A 402 means your balance has run out and needs a top-up on platform.deepseek.com. Neither one means DeepSeek is down.

  6. Sign-in and network issues

    If chat.deepseek.com won’t load at all, clear cookies and site data for deepseek.com, try another browser or the mobile app, and turn off any VPN or proxy. DeepSeek’s servers are in China, so connections from some networks can be slow.

Is DeepSeek down or just busy?

“The server is busy” usually means heavy load — especially right after a new model launch — rather than a full outage. If the site loads and some messages go through, it’s busy. If nothing loads, check status.deepseek.com. This page combines the official status page, our own reachability checks every minute and user reports.

Does the DeepSeek API share status with the chat app?

No. status.deepseek.com lists each API model separately from the chat, search and file upload services. The API has its own capacity and per-account limits, so it can behave differently from the free chat.

What do DeepSeek API error codes mean?

According to DeepSeek’s docs: 400 is an invalid request format, 401 a wrong API key, 402 insufficient balance, 422 invalid parameters, 429 a rate limit, 500 a server error and 503 an overloaded server. Only 500 and 503 point to a problem on DeepSeek’s side.

Where does DeepSeek post announcements?

DeepSeek posts model releases and notices on its official X account, @deepseek_ai, and in the news section of its API docs. Service incidents appear on status.deepseek.com.
