If Perplexity isn’t working for you

When the live checks above look normal, the problem is usually on your side or limited to one feature. These are the fixes that help most often with Perplexity:

  1. Check the right component on the status page

    status.perplexity.com lists API, Website, App and Computer as separate components. If only one of them has an incident, the others may work normally — the API can fail while the website is fine.

  2. Stuck on a browser check screen

    Perplexity is protected by Cloudflare, and VPNs make the “checking your browser” screen much more likely. Turn off your VPN or proxy, sign in (logged-out visitors are checked more often), update your browser, and clear cache and cookies for perplexity.ai.

  3. Hard refresh and update the app

    Perplexity’s own first steps are a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5 on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac), updating the mobile app and turning off any VPN. Slow answers or missing sessions often clear up on their own within a few hours.

  4. Missing threads or Pro features

    If your threads or Pro subscription seem to be gone, you have probably signed in with a different email. Every device must use exactly the same address. iCloud+ users may have subscribed with an Apple Hide My Email relay address.

  5. API errors 401, 429 and 5xx

    Perplexity’s API docs say a 401 means the API key is invalid, deleted, or on an account with no credits left. A 429 means you exceeded your usage tier’s rate limit, so retry with exponential backoff. A 5xx is a temporary server-side problem; retry it and keep the request ID for support.

Is Perplexity down or is it just me?

Check status.perplexity.com, which lists the API, Website, App and Computer separately. This page combines the official status page, our own reachability checks every minute and user reports. If none of these show a problem, try another network with your VPN turned off.

Why do I keep seeing a Cloudflare verification page?

Cloudflare screens traffic to perplexity.ai to limit abuse. VPNs, logged-out sessions and old browsers make those checks more frequent. Turning off the VPN, signing in and clearing cookies usually fixes it.

Where did my Perplexity threads go?

Threads created while you were logged out are deleted automatically after 14 days and can’t be recovered. If you were signed in, make sure you’re using the exact same email address on every device.

Does the Perplexity API have its own status?

Yes. API is its own component on status.perplexity.com. API errors can also come from your own key, credits or rate limit rather than an outage.
